while reading this I can’t help but remember how Dan Olson described his process of churning out an Amazon-slop book at the rate at which ghostwriters are often expected to produce, relying on enumeration, definition, and endless quoting of other sources in order to meet the daily word count and stay on pace. I can’t claim that that’s what brooks is doing here, but it sure reads like it

trudging through this book I was given for free at work. part I was so orientation-core, but part II has had both side-eye worthy both-sides type political discussion and a very earnest and vulnerable look at mental health. so, mixed bag I guess. we’ll see

9 months into the year of meats… akiko’s sections are getting more and more upsetting

I know Jane’s sections have always been in first person, but it feels like there’s been a shift. maybe I missed it in the beginning, but there’s more phrasing here that makes it such that she is directly writing this. she’s directing now, and as such she is starting to speak directly to the reader. idk

really enjoying this so far! always love an interesting framing device, and I like ozeki’s writing style. I’ve been reading this a few pages at a time during my lunch breaks the past few weeks, but it’s been much nicer to read it in bigger chunks during this holiday break :)

still intrigued by how this is framed… I think I recognize what the payoff will be but hmmm

fascinated by the framing of this narrative. there’s the obvious work hard at your dreams part that comes with any biography but what’s with the prominence of the civil war and why does it mention the underground railroad? I understand that any war would leave an impact on a life, especially at this formative age, but I am so curious as to where this is going.
