Had it not been written by The same biographer of books on Ben Franklin, Einstein, Steve Jobs, Da Vinci and others I would in no manner be pulled to it.

This is not a PR book, well intentionally at least it is an attempt at an explanation or one of the more peculiar yet defining figures of our time. And it thus far has done well at that task.

Goffman is one of best known sociologists. Second tier of fame behind the likes of the 19 ce giants of the discipline Marx, Weber, and Durkheim (I’d say fame goes in that order).

His works behind the presentation of self.. tend to be fairly neglect but the average intellectually explorative reader. This I believe is a mistake.

In skimming his ourve I’ve been deeply impressed. So this should be fun!!

I appreciate the desire to write a book that attempts to explain how the brain utilizes electricity. It's a topic that begs to be written about.

Presently, I am annoyed at Dr. Field's lack of triage and organization in his first section, which is not quite medical history, not quite a memoir, and not quite a biological elaboration. I am hoping that part two: "Understanding brainwaves"... Is to be an improvement.

I appreciate the desire to write a book that attempts to explain how the brain functionally uses electricity. It's a topic that begs to be written about.

I started reading the popular book on thermodynamics, “Einstein’s fridge”, to discover I did not understand the second chapter on Saudi Carnot to a degree which I found palatable. I therefore decided to pick up this book which begins with a preface of historian which I quite enjoy.

It is enjoyable to read the writings of the founders of this or that in their own words. Alas.

Listening. Not reading. Unclear if I should even put this on goodreads.

May the lords of this holy website forgive me

Paraphrasing some lines that give me a headache:

“The future of a prosperous humanity is extraordinarily bright” ok Hegel

“If each generation had to learn everything anew even a creed iron shovel would be beyond our technical reach “ unsubstantiated speculation on early hominids

“Our cosmos have a billion years history, which is small on the size of the cosmos. Trillions of years lay ahead.”

Don’t consider me impressed so far.

The book is taking a grand history and species approach, one of which has become almost trite with the many first principal books which start at the dawn of agriculture

He then moves to talk about the greatest threats to humanity is itself. And I’m too early on in the book to say if this is the actual thesis. But if it is , what a weird idea during covid 19. Hubris!

I’m further reminded of my ignorance on the voluminous literature that comprises what humans have uncovered about the nature of the cell . It is quite daunting to learn. I naturally understand such macro topics such as agnosia (a neurological disorder where retrieval would typically occur for a stimuli but fails) and the nature of animal aggression over everything with glial cells but ill make due..

It is almost a curse on me to label something as 'currently reading' on Goodreads. There is almost no choice but to abandon it for a few years. Ah well. Im gonna try again..

Thus far, Ive gone through articles from Acteycholine to Adolescent brain development. This will take a while to get through this, but It will give me a place to test out my theories on retention with speed reading.

"All is vanity and vexation of spirit;" lame and imperfect. Hadst thou Sampson's hair, Milo's strength, Scanderbeg's arm, Solomon's wisdom, Absalom's beauty, Croesus' wealth, Pasetis obulum, Caesar's valour, Alexander's spirit, Tully's or Demosthenes' eloquence..., all this would not make thee absolute; give thee content, and true happiness ...or if there be true happiness amongst us, 'tis but for a time”
