becoming increasingly frustrated with the amount of nahuatl. the author explains in the intro the purpose of it in the context of the story, but buddy i cant keep running into 4-5 12-16 letter words in a language with a complex phonological inventory PER SENTENCE... you want us to figure out what they mean organically but force a stalled brain several times each sentence... i'm lost and rereading way too much.

do not be fooled by the length of this book or its chapters. it is dense and aiming to accomplish something grand. there are a lot of characters out the gate and a lot of nahuatl with long clumps of rocky consonants.

ok so it’s about grad school but magic and also the hell of academia but also misogyny and sexual assault …

note to self: this isnt babel … a lot is going on …

rf kuang haters shut the heck up i dont care you didnt like babel this book isnt for you.

some notes:
• never in my life have i ever felt so beat over the head with purple prose. the author’s verbosity meanders so far in every direction. i am not the first to say this. maybe a thematic device for being lost in the woods, but it seems more indulgent than intentional.

just finished the paper menagerie at my desk and now im crying and have to go teach fifth graders how to order some noodles at a restaurant.

he's got some interesting stories to tell but he is not the most gifted writer... fearing concept has won over craft in regards to all its praise...
