I think also part of why I can't get into this book is that in the introduction she specifically said that her aim is to convince the reader of the unnecessary cruelty and deaths etc of the except never in my life ever have I even had someone attempted to teach me that the British empire was ever good. So anyways it's just like distracting because i feel like she's doing constant "aha!" moments for everything.

Some weird philosophizing stuff that was not what I went into this expecting or wanting (the guest going through the dark ride occupies a position closer to the artisan than the modern (1950s) factory worker because they see the completed outcome of their work following the whole process (riding and getting off the dark ride) instead of just a single point on the assembly ride) but still some interesting bits.

Already can tell that this will be an excellent book (as long as the slight repetitiveness of the introduction don't plague the rest of the book too badly 🤕).

Mediocre but interesting enough to complete. Okay so I'm that this is not an AI audiobook narrator like I can look her up and see that she's a person but there are so many tempo, emphasis, and pronunciation errors here that it really sounds like an AI voice reading it... Like pronouncing "eff stroke aye" as in F/A 18 Hornet nobody says that. But I don't mean to accuse 🙂‍↕️.

Definitely not loving this but it's still pretty good, not a subject that I know anything about so it's interesting 🙂‍↕️.

Extreme horror is usually a miss for me but my friend recommended this one to me. I guess it's better than most of the (very few) others I've read but idk how much that's saying.

DNF. Already was thinking it was very mediocre and then the author got a basic and easily checkable fact completely wrong so now I don't trust anything else in this book 🤕.

Oh, we're going in an interesting direction though I'm not sure how much I like it so far... Still half the book to go, though. The main character has grown on me a lot.

Uh wow the main character is a gritty detective basically to the point of parody... Alright so far though.

Okay I've been extremely critical of this book but the last ~10% has gotten very good 😁 so hopefully that continues on from here. Still horribly unfunny though jfc.

I've read the fan translation of this book several times (though it's been a few years) so now I'm reading the official translation now that it's out 🙂‍↕️.

I'm also comparing as I read the fan translation and official translation (though I can't compare when it comes to the quality of the translation, just the writing itself) so I will be going slow ofc.

Okay so every single joke in this book has fallen flat for me and I have not even smiled a single time at any attempt at humor. The plot and writing style is interesting enough to keep me going but I don't think I'll enjoy this much overall, but once it rly gets going I'm hopeful 🙏. God this moment rn is so bad though why is her mom talking to her in therapy speak omg -_---

Part four is definitely much weaker than the previous parts (about how the Black Death led to societal changes in the following ~two centuries) but I understand it's inclusion and it's still interesting 🙂‍↕️.

Really loving this as a whole but especially the effort he puts into making the reader understand just how horrible it all was. It's one thing to list off estimated 30-75% death rates for various cities/regions but it's another to include quotes from the people who lives through the plague and recorded what they saw. 🤕.
