Everett really does a disservice to James in forcing his “intelligence” upon us rather than casually revealing it the way Twain did in the original. The debate with Voltaire is so forced, unrealistic and unnecessary. The push to show that James really thinks in the same vernacular as white elites does a huge disservice to AAE and completely misunderstands language.
