I’m really enjoying the way the author builds up the tension.

Everett really does a disservice to James in forcing his “intelligence” upon us rather than casually revealing it the way Twain did in the original. The debate with Voltaire is so forced, unrealistic and unnecessary. The push to show that James really thinks in the same vernacular as white elites does a huge disservice to AAE and completely misunderstands language.

I’d never considered the Chicago Fair in connection with our imperial adventures in the Caribbean before. Very interesting to see the twisting of history to meet contemporary needs.
