Twain’s dialogue is far superior to anything found in James. It’s not only more rhythmic it also feels more natural. It’s also interesting how much more subtle Twain is at letting us know Huck has figured out the hucksters.

Having Huck apologize to Jim is such a beautifully poignant moment in the book.

This is getting tiresome. Huck and James are discussing the hypothetical genie and three wishes, and the author has to let us know that James is so “smart” he’s wondering “what would Kierkegard wish for”. I’m sure by book’s end James will have referenced all the major philosophers so we know just how smart he is.

I’m really enjoying the way the author builds up the tension.

Everett really does a disservice to James in forcing his “intelligence” upon us rather than casually revealing it the way Twain did in the original. The debate with Voltaire is so forced, unrealistic and unnecessary. The push to show that James really thinks in the same vernacular as white elites does a huge disservice to AAE and completely misunderstands language.
