Read the first chapter, I'm now 35 pages in, but it felt like 100. Do we have anything except the pretty cover? I didn't expect a lot of plot to happen in the first chapter, and I was right about that. But at least give me world building? Logic? Characters that have personalities?

Please.

Maybe I'm the problem because a lot of people seem to like this, but so far I'm not convinced.

Emotional damage

"Where can they be? What must he do? How can they all be out? How can his mother and grandmother not be in the house, as they usually are [...]? [...] Where should he go? Whom should he call on for help? And where is everyone?"

All that in the same paragraph, right next to each other (except that one sentence in between) is crazy.

I'm sorry, but we do not need 6 sounds and 4 scents to describe one place, followed by three ways in which the air is different from home (After already saying they are very different).
Is it just me?

I really want to like this, but I'm scared that I won't.

She's so insensitive. "I get that she's traumatized because her son was kidnapped but she is overprotective of her other son, he's an adult now and can protect himself." Poor woman is traumatized! Leave her alone
