I am really not sure I like Linus. At least he just THOUGHT about kicking Theo, not actually doing it, but still... This instinctive first reaction he has had so far was not very endearing. I am really hoping for some character growth soon, b/c otherwise this will go in the dnf pile.

So far I am not convinced. Every person in this book is a caricature, and that includes the mc. I am not sure how serious I can take a book that's not taking itself serious. But I am giving it a chance.

First of all Her Majesty is a little cunt. Her baby daddy has her by the balls and it’s just embarrassingly sad.
Cadou is sweet as ever and he deserves all the kisses and why oh why is Evemer not kissing him? The reason why we find at 66%. Thehehehe. Now this was unexpected.

All I can say is that I had to stop reading and wait till the other 7 books arrived. I am obsessed. The first time in years I bought physical books.
I agree with what others said, that the translation is awkward and the prose very much not the best. I cannot comment on the quality of the translation itself but the translator clearly is not the best writer.
But all that does not matter, b/c Hulian is just everything.

This is a really nice slow burn.
<spoiler>Kadou and Evemer are just the two silliest men ever who really should stop being so silly,. And that first kiss? Ohh my, I neded to read that three times, it was so beautiful! </spoiler>
I really love Alexandra Rowlands prose. She has just such a way with words. And her characters always need to be hugged.

So, 33% in and its like... the tone of the book shifted completely. Tam is not the guy he was just a few pages back. From a man on the breaking point to radicicolous banter. An this does not feel like proper character growth. One min he's all I HATE Lyford, now "he’s my fav person". And of course everything is Tams fault. So lets send him on some ridiculous quests. Also "no sex" was upheld for idk 10 pages or so.

Okay, I am not sure if I like Lyford so much anymore. To bully someone and then tell them "I did it bc I liked you and you should have known that!" is just so... malicious. So you hurt someone bc that would get you their attention (no shit Sherlock) and then expect them to be happy about? Hmkay...

This is an interesting read. So far nothing pissed me off. But it also does not really excite me. I expected it to be a "lol" book, but at best I find it mildy amusing. Tbh, perfect as a bedtime read. Bland in a good way so I am not tempted to read till 5 am.

Weir is really a man that never grew out of his "poop and piss jokes are funny" phase. Of maybe he just that kind of guy. And, comparing PHM with TM so far, he luckily got a bit better at writing women in PHM, bc hell, Mindy is of course jeoulous of the other women being prettier. If the rest of his writing werent so good, I would have DNF just for that bs.

I get that this is thought to be written mostly by Lee insteam of Clarke.
One thing that frustrates me to now end so far is that we went from an society where poly marriages are common (In RwR the Captain hat two wives. Two men of his crew were married to the same woman.) to one were we parade classic family strucutres as the norm. I could be misunderstandig but so far we left our poly lore in the past.

So far I feel a bit odd about this book.
Coming from Murderbot I expected to love it, b/c Martha Wells, duh.
But, I dunno. The naming system is confusing, half the time I am confused who is who and what is what and where is where.
The prose, pacing, etc is really not comparable to MB, by length. Conversations feel stilted, the characters shallow. I am not sure if she has a different editor for this book?

I still really can't connect with the characters. I should care but I don't. The world continues to fascinate me, but sadly I don't really care if any of the mcs live or die. And while I do wanna know what happens and how it all ends, with those bland characters it's a bit of a slog to get through this book.

First I thought, okay this is ... mid... The prose is not got, but not that bad. The fmc is a bit whiny but hey, she has a badass job. But gosh the further I get it the worse it gets. This book needed some really heavy handed editing. The weird exposition, the tell instead of show. FMC is tstl, mmc is a sad boy and not in the good way. I only continue b/c this feels like roadkill, horrifying but you cant look away.
