i wish i had more of either self-control or instinct toward self-preservation bc i am so stressed and scared at this point i made A stay on the phone with me (he has a day full of meetings) so i could have a tether to the real world while im reading about all these girls dying in gruesome empiric ways

anyone who knows me would rightfully assume i’m out of my mind if i choose to read horror of my own volition but. the two main characters here share names w my roommate & myself and so. i was Curious. and also im pretty sure this is a lesbian horror novel about the “rot” of the british empire. not groundbreaking stuff but not a genre i read in so it’s interesting. but also terrifying

it is quite sad to see the shadows of lynch's own life cast upon locke's, from the alcoholic binge to the germanish word he invented for suicidal ideation, but i will say one thing lynch excels at is writing a book nobody expected. it seems to be a unanimous opinion that this third book is the weakest of the 3/7 written so far, but i am still amused

why can’t i ever stumble into reading something unexpectedly lighthearted and whimsical lately it feels like every novel i pick up ends up surprise dipping into the horror genre and i get Scared when reading after evelyn’s gone to bed . brushes w the supernatural aside this book is funny jess kidd writes very rhythmically and has always had very strongly embodied narrators

oh no the ensemble got better as it went along but this is starting in a really rough spot

this book is like yolk by mary hk choi on steroids and even as a rare yolk enjoyer i don’t mean that in a good way

when thorn said ophelia has a 'preternatural tendency' to get herself into 'disasters'... truer words have never been spoken. the fun thing about these books is even if the endings are frightfully predictable you never have any idea what kind of 'soup' ophelia will dunk herself into next

how is this one of the most celebrated YA books in translation to english the plot doesn’t make Sense . none of this should be plausibly happening to the fiancée of a guy powerful enough to be detested by the whole court

so i thought this was a retelling of east of the sun west of the moon (the norwegian fairytale) and apparently that isn’t the case and this first book has been ranted at for being terribly misogynistic but i am very easily compelled by fantasy world building so i’ll keep going i guess. reading this in the winthrop book depot & cafe w an apple cider vinegar lemonade

why is there a third book in this series. leigh bardugo your biggest hit was your duology there's no need to keep trying to write 3 books in each universe. unfortunately i have not read a single thing by bardugo that trumps six of crows but i will read the third book in this series because i think ill have nightmares about what might happen in it if i don't

unfortunately even though this book teeters on the edge of Too Woke (an assortment of queer side characters w a very heterosexual main couple, one of which is a white man) and it gets mental health preachy im having a good time. it is reading better than the first book

beginning to realise how annoyed people must get when i Capitalize Random Words for Emphasis in texts . sorry about that. i think i might one-shot this book; after part 1 the narration and geography become easier to parse. i deeply wish i'd read this before interviewing madeleine thien about the book of records because this is the closest fictional architectural counterpart to the Sea that i've found

the magic system and its ties to religion are well-developed but the writing feels like incurious telling and i have realised i despise the trope of 'i am a white woman and you are a man of color and therefore we are both outsiders who can bond through that marginalisation' i actually think sciona being courageous and respectable doesnt preclude me from hating her guts

reading this while love is going up in smoke and i feel profoundly alone / defeated but also incredibly flat / detached has been an insane experience. this + bibliophobia (one which compresses & the other which dilutes time) in williamstown, a place where he says i feel both past and present and thats why time feels so syrupy & liquid, was fucking insane

realising smth i dislike adamantly abt rfk's writing is this painful self-consciousness and effort to (1) display rather than share / invite into the knowledge she's acquired (even abt smth as non-pretentious as mountain climbing); (2) address common criticisms through verbal gymnastics and discourse w/o curing the fundamentals (obsession w academic elitism & status disguised as intellectualism)
