É como se os fenômenos surgissem diante de nós sem que fossem determinados em sua maneira de ser por uma expectativa do entendimento, ou seja, eles nos surpreendem e nos fazem falar. A última reserva de nossa capacidade de espanto diante do mundo, que está na origem do pensamento e da linguagem, encontra-se concentrada nesse território da estética.

A guerra, que diferia das violências animais, desenvolveu uma crueldade de que os animais são incapazes. Em particular, o combate frequentemente seguido pelo massacre dos adversários, preludiava normalmente o suplício dos prisioneiros. Essa crueldade é o aspecto especificamente humano da guerra.

Mas quanto amor, meus senhores, quanto amor me acontecia padecer nesses meu devaneios, nesses "salvamentos em tudo o que é belo e sublime": embora fosse um amor fantástico, que jamais convidava efetivamente para algo humano, tão abundante era ele que, depois, nem se sentia já, sequer necessidade de aplicá-lo: seria um luxo demasiado.
