the “has someone ever taken care of you?” line coming from this book is crazy

okay. i’ve heard some questionable things abt sarah j maas and how acotar is lowkey anti-irish and has weird politics?? i held my breath until i saw the map and heard that the villains are faeries, which are very prominent in celtic mythology, and now i’m starting to get it. am i reading too much into this? curious to hear another take on this

also percy’s quips about his intelligence (or lack there of) are almost entirely internal in this book (much toned down from the last book and he comes up w many plans on his own which i appreciate bc percy is NOT stupid), which is leading me more towards the “percy is an unreliable narrator who has been through a lot so his self-esteem is astronomically low” which actually makes me kinda sad

“but with annabeth in danger, my qualms about attacking nymphs in their boutiques evaporated.”

percy is so loverboy and i can’t help but laugh that if he had realized his feelings earlier in pjo, nobody would’ve touched annabeth that entire series

“…hope is the correct response to the strange, often terrifying miracle of consciousness.”

my harvey moment was while reading looking for alaska in middle and high school. to see john green express his moment understanding the importance of hope—even if he doesn’t necessarily know in what, yet—is so meaningful to me because that is exactly how i felt after that book

i think why i love this so much is that it reminds me of weird but true books and i used to devour those as a kid. but also philosophical!

the books circling in on each other based on the seasons of the show they’re on is such a fun detail too. cotg as the lightning thief, wottg bringing back circe… this is the best

it feels wildly out of character for percy fatal-flaw-is-loyalty jackson to ditch the city he’s lived all his life in, his family when his mother is having a baby, and the camp he’s called home since he was 12 and has fought 2 wars to protect

and i also like that percy apologizes and grover tells him that he can be stressed about it, because it’s true that percy should be stressed about it! i also have to also confess im relieved to hear from percy himself that they’ll only be in new rome for college, because the idea of the two of them leaving new york and camp half blood to go permanently live across the country makes my heart hurt for them.

i am actually content with this fight between percy and grover. this doesn’t feel like reaching or anything, it makes sense. (and also doesn’t treat grover like he’s stupid and careless, which sometimes the books accidentally slip into. he’s the lord of the wild and a cloven elder for crying aloud and an expert seeker who found all 3 of the big 3’s kids)

i forgot how much i missed john green’s voice in writing until i opened up the first page and couldn’t stop smiling. he was one of the predominant narrators of my teenage years through his fiction. to have him again in my 20s as a nonfiction writer and learn about his life beyond the pieces he’s “written in code” is beyond delightful. i already know from the jump this is one of my new favorite books
