Laurie is finished with Bittersweet: How Sorrow and Longing Make Us Whole
Highly recommend! This book addressed the benefits of longing, the perils of toxic positive and the inevitability of death. Cain's writing (just like Quiet) combines her own personal stories, professionals in the field and lots of research.

Beautiful poetry for those that aren't super into poetry. A few poems that feature dogs, birds, love and grief. Cut to me reading ALL her other collections.

Great writing, kind of a slow moving story. Not quite sure what’s the buzz is all about 🤷🏼‍♀️

Laurie is finished with Of Women and Salt
I really enjoyed the writing and the stories were relevant and important. But it just seemed a bit unfinished, each chapter is a different woman's story. I didn't feel all the women's stories were wrapped up and one woman appears to have just been forgotten. It's a debut novel and you can tell, but I look forward to their next novel.

Laurie is on page 288 of 293 of Glow from Within
I did learn some things about how the skin on our face works and how products repair/improve our skin. Buuuut, I'm just not sure I want to take all of her advice, there's a few things in here related to oils and natural ingredients that I think a dermatologist would disagree with. She also recommends her products from her brand and other brands that are outrageously overpriced. I'm inspired to read more from derms.

Laurie is finished with Pickard County Atlas
Not bad, but not great. Read if for a mystery book group, it is not a mystery or a thriller (as it's labeled). Writing style reminds me of Cormac McCarthy, it's a slow burn character study following people in a small Nebraska town in the 70s. Pretty depressing, but not mad I read it.

Laurie is finished with Dear Life: A Doctor's Story of Love and Loss
Beautifully written, reflective stories from a palliative care physician. Recommend for anyone that has lost someone, spent a lot of time in a hospital, or is just curious about the end of life.

Laurie is finished with The Midnight Library
I really think people go gaga over any book that either has the word Library in the title or even mentions a library. This book is very overrated, it starts out ok, the concept is interesting but there's a lot of holes in "how things work" and I could predict how it was going to end.

Laurie is starting The Kitchen Boy: A Novel of the Last Tsar
This was sooo good and highly recommend if you like historical fiction. I think of these as imagined fiction, the characters are based on real people but the author takes liberties with what really happened. I'm looking forward to reading all the books written about the Romanovs.

Laurie is starting Resistance: A Songwriter's Story of Hope, Change, and Courage
I was hoping for more personal stories and more of a memoir. I appreciate the lyrics to songs throughout & the explanations of the origins/meaning of those songs. I didn’t appreciate the commentary in politics or the role of artists today, not because it wasn’t good. I just wanted more of a traditional memoir from her.

Laurie is on page 160 of 464 of The Vexations
Beautifully sad, based on the life of composer Erik Satie. (You def know his Gymnopede #1). Tells the story of his life, his siblings and his artist friends living in Paris 1900-1920s. Beautifully written and a very engaging novel. Cut to me listening to his music crying in a corner.

Laurie is on page 107 of 368 of Quit Like a Woman: The Radical Choice to Not Drink in a Culture Obsessed with Alcohol
Am I quitting booze? No but I really enjoyed this book. It def starts out a little aggressive “alcohol is poison, we are all idiots for drinking.” Which, let’s face it, is totally true. But eventually it turns into a great, very practical memoir/ self-help diatribe on going sober as a woman. A great feminist perspective on alcohol culture & recovery programs. Highly recommend to those quitting or cutting down.
