I sense that I could very well be on the cusp of reading a literary masterpiece. However, for a first read the alternating sections are beginning to effect my overall interest. There is one storyline that I'm more attracted to, and I want to be able to run with that one. However, there are enough seeds in both narratives to know that they are connected. So hopefully the payoff will be worth it.

This is my first McCarthy read. I am aggravated by the lack of quotation marks, BUT am loving the novel so far.

I wasn't expecting so much technology to be incorporated (boats, diving equipment, etc.). I haven't determined the time period yet, and am enjoying the challenge of figuring it out. There are specific historical references that give the readers clues.

Although not literally "day by day", the snapshots into Faulkner's life are incredible. The moments that shaped his life are brought into focus in a different way through this presentation... I am absolutely loving it.

My most pressing question so far: On pge 89 when Ferber has Leslie discuss the history of how America obtained TX from Mexico, she says "Still, they didn't actually grab the land away from anyone, the way we did. Of course there were the Indians, but perhaps they didn't count."

Is this an honest statement, emanating from Ferber through her character? Leslie has been written as such an UNprejudiced person so far.

This took a *really* long time to grab my interest. I was determined to read it though, based on the recs of two or three of my book club buddies in the GR "On the Southern Literary Trail" group.

Book Two of this novel reminds me so much of William Faulkner's "The Bear". Silas fishing in the woods: "His eyes lit on a crow preening on a sourwood limb, backlit by the setting sun. He tipped his hat to the bird..." The community is both physically and spiritually connected to their native home of Cataloochee.

My first read of PERSUASION. I am enjoying the first hint of comedic suspense, where Anne just misses her first meeting with Wentworth due to her nephew's collarbone accident.

I love Chapters 27 and 28. Edmond Dantes is running around like Santa Claus with surprise gifts for his friends!
