Book Two of this novel reminds me so much of William Faulkner's "The Bear". Silas fishing in the woods: "His eyes lit on a crow preening on a sourwood limb, backlit by the setting sun. He tipped his hat to the bird..." The community is both physically and spiritually connected to their native home of Cataloochee.
