I get why authors try to put more modern sounding text in dialogue but I think it sometimes gets to a point

you know sometimes I wish characters were less direct in saying exactly what's going on. like i don't need to be told something is potentially traumatic, let it just be that without spelling it out

I wish Amelia's father was given more depth so the whole "I didn't expect to lose an heir, I've always expected to lose Amelia" hit harder. Like. The preemptory grief could be so interesting instead everyone surrounding Amelia is practically a caricature
