I do have sort of a basic problem with the idea a PhD student wouldn’t think to Google a person he was researching…

“Two children he had had, and he had not seen either clearly. But perhaps no parent can truly see their child. When we look, we see only the mirror of our own faults.” Eww on that last part. No.

The things that nags at my brain is the question of Circe’s needs. I understand mortal needs. Her som is a demigod… yet he needs food, will die, needs sleep, etc. So a god doesn’t need those things, right? Apparently not. She eats and sleeps. She can feel physical pain. She will live forever? Yes. He will not? No. I like clearer roles. I feel like I don’t understand her limitations.

“A thousand years i had lived, but they did not feel so long as [my son’s] childhood.” Lol #boymom

As a mom, this is pretty funny. A goddess raising a human child. Lol

Yeesh. The lack of description generally has been a good thing for these last sections!

The f-word has come up exactly twice thus far. Both instances are used to reference copulation with divine bovine. Just an interesting stat.

Excellent pacing. Very mysterious without being a mystery. Absolutely tantalizing but horribly gritty. Gut-wrenching but not a horror piece. Love the first person. Love the flashbacks and the little nuggets of info we get each time. Im hooked though im sad.

Haven’t been so enthralled by a book in a while. It’s gritty, starting with death, and engaging. Normally i don’t like books that jump from past to “present”. I cant quite tell what’s next. Cant see down the road. But BOY i have thoughts about the break up!!! The next section may kill me tho.

Omg, poor rosemary. A fate worse than death. At least when you’re dead, people mourn you. She was just covered up with a rug.

“This was something that Jackie and Lee had in common with the Kennedy men, an incestuous tendency to compete for lovers and sometimes share them.” … gross! Lol

If nothing else, i believe in the Kennedy Curse now. I wonder when that term was coined. It wasnt so much invented as it was acknowledged, like gravity.

If he didn’t really love her, WHY would he re-up for another year of the hell of war?

What does it tell the reader that the man who got her into the military, telling her women can be heroes, is a liar? This needs wrapped up. Hopefully it will be. Otherwise this seems a pretty fatal flaw.

We naturally trusted Rye, as he was Fin’s bff. Was her brother mistaken in being friends with him? Is he not so bad??

Things this protagonist can do: immediately look up a man’s wife in hospital records when his name is mentioned. Things this protagonist cannot do: look up a man from few fraught years’ prior, whose fate was uncertain tho bleak, whom she loved?

Pacing is very fast now.

Cant decide why her friends have fared so much batter than her, post-war.

I feel like the book is finally back on track. It was reasonable, what she went thru and felt after the war, but it was also so boring a read after the exciting and compelling events jn Vietnam.

I had a hard time imagining Henry looking like anyone other than Cheech.
