I do feel like there are some problems with the characterizations of Lo from the very start to later. The August thing makes sense. Her being madly in love with him still, tho? Was she? Were we supposed to sort out parentage based on which pockets a man puts his hands in? Still very good but I am a little miffed by some details.

Hooked. In a real ‘60s/‘70s trend here!

My favorite kinds of books are ones in which young teenage girls are thrown into a very grown-up situation with lots of responsibilities. Watching them navigate adult customs and priorities for the first time is so funny and real for me. It’s a nice way to remember that kids see the world differently and also to laugh about the strange things you start to do as an adult.

I adore the culture clash between two seemingly similar families… but also that the author doesn’t take sides. The buttoned-up family is a mess and the messy family is dysfunctional too. I do hope that Mary Jane realizes that it’s not only bad that her parents never praise her, it’s also a gift that they’ve taught her to take care of herself.

Every book should be such a fun read.
