Unfortunately killing off all the charismatic characters in the first book might be making itself felt (kinda the point, though I do miss the dour ones having charm to bounce off of)

I miss the ~90 minute long epic chapters of the first two books - I know there aren’t any flashbacks in this one so the structure is all off, but it just feels wrong to be up to chapter 9 (where the other books ended) and only a third of the way through haha

Being a New Zealander and only knowing like one thing about WWI really adds to the sense of foreboding of the climax here. Everything else about the war, however horrible, feels quite distant (which is part of the point of the story) but I know far too well what the “CRISIS: 7 April-17 May 1951” in the title of Part 6 is going to be
