the goodreads folk don’t seem very comfortable with this book bc:
1. the humour isn’t “woke”, though I wouldn’t call it politically incorrect either
2. it’s a pop (!!!) history book - and not everyone got that
It’s not that deep, it’s just a general overlook of things. Won’t teach you any life lessons or change your worldview, but it can lead to further research if you want it to

ok, there should have been two books: a prequel and a sequel. Waaaaay too much info that isn’t well developed or foreshadowed

“she was very attractive” sounds like a robot or a 19th-century-like euphemism. It just doesn’t sound genuine

a lot of exposition, so it feels novice, especially the bits about 1920’s Paris. Opaline doesn’t feel real. It’s like she’s a character from a mid rom-com. More emphasis could have been put on the fact both she and Martha wish to escape from men who want to control them and their lives.
