Jimmy Peeler is on page 13 of 448 of The Gunfighters: How Texas Made the West Wild
Good prologue! Opens with the Hickok-Tutt duel in Springfield, 1865 and does a good job of establishing the debate of myth/fact perception before diving into the history. Also, MAPS!!!

Jimmy Peeler is 50% done with The Collected Short Stories of Louis L'Amour, Volume 6
Volume Six for me is broken up into two parts, I finished the first part not too long ago. A solid four out of five, it’s very understandable why his western stuff shines more than his adventures or his crime stories, but I cannot lie, a good chunk of this was incredibly enjoyable and a breeze to read through. I’ll read part two tomorrow.

It’s been mentioned that Amos & Martin (his brothers adopted kid) had been out for the better part of the year, venturing as far as 300 miles before snowfall, low supplies and other threats made them turn back towards home. They find a shelter at Mathison’s place, Martin having been sweet on Laurie, the Mathison daughter from a young age. The few chapter where they’re back home are really good.

The first act of this book has been coming along fairly quickly! Unlike the movie, there’s no “Welcome home, Ethan.” We don’t get to see Amos interact with his brothers family.
(In the book, his name is Amos.)
When chapter one opens, Amos is already gone with the others looking for a Comanche raiding party- his brother is left with his wife and kids at home and things turn south for them fairly quickly.

The first short story, Law Of The Desert Born, reaffirmed my fear of being stranded in the desert. Holy hell. L’Amour’s descriptions of the lava beds & how the dust & sand filled Shad’s ears & nostrils make me physically recoil.
