This book is monotonous. It has many chapters that talk about whaling and whaling related things but do not add anything to the actual plot and I have a strong suspicion that many parts of the book could be removed without affecting the story. I mean what the heck do I care about incorrect representations of whales in different media? This book reads more like a whaling guide than an actual story at this point.

Of the Christening Basin is some of the best text I have ever read. The basin itself transcends time and links generations across time. This is great example of an object value being not in its monetary worth but in its sentimental attachment to the owner. Another great section was how Hans decided to remember his grandfather in his prime as depicted in a painting. Not with human faults but in his painted perfection

TBH i am going completely blind into this book and have not idea what to expect. So far we have a youth traveling to sanatorium for three weeks. The sanatorium is in an isolated mountain range far from the rest of the world. We also see that customs that are common to the protagonist begin to change and slowly start to mirror those around him. Cant wait to see were the story goes.

The writing is extremely exaggerated in the best possible way. There are so many metaphors, Similes, and analogies and I am barely starting the book. Also there are many clever references that are sprinkled in the text. Cannot wait to see where the story takes off to

We finally know that Archimbodi is an alias and how he came to obtain the alias. Also some other smaller mysteries are solving themselves. Currently we are still way in the past and in Cologne so i do not know how we are going to get a satisfying closure in the last hundred pages left in the book. Other than that the section talking of the difference between Major and Minor works was incredible.

Archimboldis part is faster paced and more entertaining then the rest of the book. I hope this keeps up and we can get some answers to the many unanswered questions the book has.

Completed Part about the crimes and have started the part about Archimboldi. Finally after six hundred pages are we going to learn who Archimboldi is and how he is tied up to Santa Teresa and all the murders that have taken over the years. I hope this section makes slugging through the rest of the book worth it.

The story seems to finally be moving forward. I still believe much of it could have been condensed but overall the pace is picking up.

The story gives an exposition of the main characters of the story. We have buttercup who is the bride, Westley who is the main love interest, and prince Humperdink who is i am assuming will be the main antagonist. Overall the story is entertaining and light hearted and I am having a blast reading it.

The author making it seem like this was an abridge version of the book had me looking in the web trying to find an unabridged version... I found out later that it was a literary device he used... and that there was not other version.

Dude this is progression is slow. Interestingly enough the different parts seem to be almost fully standalone and only some small connections are there. hopefully the story starts to become more streamlined because most of the text, even though it makes it more real and organic, could be removed and we could have gotten to were we are at in about 150 pages and not 450... I hope things start to pick up.

Finished the part about fate and I am starting the part about the crimes. Slowly the book has guided me to the main section and now the main cast has fully been introduced and it is now prepared to display the main plot. This book is taking me longer to read than expected it almost feels like it is making me slow down and take my time with it. Well onto the next section time to learn what's really going on.

Amalfitano part has my brain constantly engaged trying to unravel the web of its stories. There is just so many names, cultures, and events that are completely foreign to me and I am loosing sense of where reality and fiction meet. This I have to admit is fun and I am enjoying it a lot. One thing I am theorizing is that Amalfitano voice is actually telepathy he is having with Archimboldi. Also his wife did him dirty.

With the first part complete the search for Archimboldi continues, a love triangle ends in an unexpected twist, and the story slowly develops organically overtime. We are finally in the town of Santa Teresa; The main location and fictional town where all the murders are happening.

Good book but slow progress. Here is an example of just why this book is taking me so long to read:
"his novels and stories, that is, seemed completely foreign, a shapeless and mysterious verbal mass, something that appeared and disappeared capriciously, literally a pretext, a false door, a murderers alias, a hotel bathtub full of amniotic liquid in which he, would end up committing suicide for no reason"
