One surprising thing is when new people went to Auschwitz. They were told lies that is would be nice but it is a horrible place. The new people believed what they said. It stated in the text "Have you heard of Auschwitz? Our kapo asked the new prisoners. No? Death, of course. Death waits for you. Look and see." This is surprising because Auschwitz is a horrible place and many people don't know what it is.

One sad thing was when Yanek was put into a camp. He and his family are all in the camp. The conditions were really bad. He was moved. He has to do work and try to survive. "Chandeliers made out of salt. After so many months and years of dirty street and peeling paint, of gray uniform and spartan barrack.(100) This was sad because he is holding on to his life and there are people wanting to kill him.

One sad part was when Yanek's parents were taken. Yanek and his family tried to hide from the Nazi but failed. His parents were put into a camp. He didn't know what to and wanted to give up. It stated in the book "Maybe I should just go and give myself to the Nazi, i though with bitterness, with defeat."(59) This is sad because he lost his family. He is all alone and by himself. He probably felt hopeless.

They had to take in families even when they could barely feed them selves. They couldn't feed themselves because their shops were closed. It stated in the book "The work gangs and the lack of food made him look like he'd aged ten years in two."(19) This is sad because they were starving.

He cowered in front of the polar bear to show that he isn't a threat; but the momma polar bear still hit him. " swatted at him with one of her claws, shredding the sleeve of his parka and raking long, deep gashes in his arm."(95) this is surprising because he got hit by a momma polar bear.

One important was when Akira Kristiansen spots a wildfire but her dad did nothing. Her father thought that it was a nature thing. He thought that it was part of nature. He believes that humans didn't do anything bad to the environment. "Dad, look. A wildfire! Akira Kristiansen cried."(2) This is important because they didn't do anything. If they did something then, they would have a problem at all.

When Josef's dad came back from being taken away, it was a sad part. Because Josef's family is Jewish, they we're treated right in Germany. His dad was practicing law even though he shouldn't have. Since he's been back, he has been acting differently. He looks slender. It was stated in the book "Too thin. A skeleton in a threadbare suit three sizes too big for him." This proves that Josef's father is extremely thin.

One interesting part was Brandon was when noticed that the south tower disappeared. While Brandon was in the north tower, the south tower got hit. It really surprised him. "The South Tower was gone. Like some sort of awful magician's trick, it had just disappeared."(265) This is interesting because Brandon didn't even notice that the other tower got destroyed.

One sad part of the book is when Reshmina sees writing on cave walls. Reshmina and Taz are stuck in a cave, and figures out it is more than a just a cave, it's a memorial. the writing they found said "We are in a conflict. We are content with fear. We are content with blood. But we will never be content with a master."(261) This is a sad quote because it shows that Afghans will stay with their morals no matter what.

One sad part was when we figure out that Reshmina's sister is dead cause of the US army. Hila was their older sister. This really affected Pasoon. The last thing that Hila gave to Passon was a toy air plane. He likes the Taliban more than the American Army but it is the opposite for Reshmina. It said "They killed my sister Hila! Pasoon cried."(Pg 29) This shows that he is upset that they killed his sister.

She isn't allowed to go but she did. "Beatrice? a voice behind me says. I turn, and Caleb stands behinds me ."(350) This shows that if Tris is willing to break the rules to see her brother than he is an important person to her.

She does well in the simulation and there is a large gap between number one and two. so Peter the number two ranking gets mad. The last time someone got first they got stabbed in the eye. "My name is in the last slot."(266) She is a big target now because everyone wants to be number one. They will do anything to be number one.

A shocking part was when Tris figured out that her mother was a Dauntless. When Tris finally meets her mother; she was easily able to navigate around the Dauntless area. "My mother was Dauntless."(188) That prove that Tris knows that her mother was Dauntless. How would she be able to move around quickly there of all places. This was shocking to me because a Dauntless personality is way different than an Abnegation.

One surprising part was when Four hits Tris with a knife. Tris takes Al's punishment. She shouldn't flinch but Four was throw knifes over her head. He shouldn't actually hit her because purpose was not to flinch. It wasn't to doge his knife throwing. In the text it said "you did that on purpose! I shouted. Yes, I did, he said quietly."(165) It wasn't by accident but on purpose. Why would Four want to hurt Tris?

A shock part in the book was when Beatrice's brother Caleb picked the faction Erudite. Everyone thought that he was an Abnegation because he showed that he was selfless but he was faking it. In the book it stated " My brother, my selfless brother,a faction transfer? My brother born for Abnegation, Erudite"? Even Beatrice was surprised that he switched faction. She thought that he was born to be a Abnegation.

One character trait for Mrs. Bates was motherly. When a boy tries to steal her purse she fixes him. She saw his dirty face and she allowed him to wash it at her house. Like how a mother would clean their child. The boy was hungry so she gave him a meal. A mother would feed their kid. In the book she said "You ought to be my son". This proves that she sees him to be her son. She takes care of him and teaches him.

An important part of the book was when we figured out that the narrator's family was poor. He didn't get the jacket he asked his mom for but a hideous one. When it was ripped he still kept it. "she said that there were children in Mexico who would love that jacket. This proves that his mother couldn't afford to buy a new one. Someone who could afford a new jacket would buy one. Especially when a jacket is ripped.
