One interesting part was when Max defeated Joe Louis who was black. After the fight, people wanted him to fight a gypsy or a Jew. In the book it said, "'It'd be fun to see Max take down all the mongrel races one at a time. Wouldn't it?'" (254). This shows that people enjoy seeing a white man beat all of the other "inferior" people.

One surprising part of the book was when Karl was expelled for being Jewish. His parents were now worried about his little sister also being expelled. In the book it said, "'Expelled. Not just me. All of the Jewish kids were kicked out'" (194). This shows that because of Hitler's reign and the Nazis coming to power, Karl and all of the other Jews at his school were being stripped of an education.

One interesting part of the book was when Karl felt a level of respect while running early in the morning. It said, "He nodded to me as I passed and watched me run by with a look that I took to be respect...I felt a satisfying surge of adrenaline at being the only person out there training" (63). This shows that Karl liked knowing he was the only person getting up and training early in the morning.

One surprising part of the story was when Karl got beat up for being Jewish. A group of kids called the "Wolf Pack" jumped him on the last day of school. It said, "Franz lurched forward and shot a fist at me that landed at the bottom of my rib cage" (11). Also it said, "'That doesn't matter, you have Jew blood'" (8). These quotes show that Karl was beat up for the sole purpose of being Jewish.

One shocking part was when Jax explained that he was acting like a coward/bum because he became a cop and was working undercover, causing him to make a "bet" with a criminal. It said, "Jax told them about his undercover assignment and how he had to pretend to be a drinking, gambling idiot. And how it had led to the arrest of a serious criminal" (274). This shows how Jax's surprising behavior were backed by his job.

One part that showed Masterson played dirty was when Chris got hit in the face. He headbutted Chris in the nose, shocking him. It said, "Masterson snapped his head straight into my nose. I heard the crack and felt the cartilage shift in my nose....Masterson took advantage to spin right and shoot the layup" (123). This proves they play dirty because Masterson played right through Chris's injury without stopping.

One surprising part was when Theo found out his dad was online dating. They usually tell each other everything, so Theo was shocked when he found out. It said, "Theo checked his dad's history. Why Wait Mate. A dating site!....His dad should have told him about this whole online dating thing" (59-60). This proves that Theo was surprised and unhappy about his father keeping the online dating in the dark.

One surprising part of the story was when Theo Rollins let the haters distract him. Since Theo is a very tall basketball player, people usually yell things like "sasquatch" at his games. In the text it said, "Theo felt his skin burn. Don't look! He looked. Saw their smirking faces. That's all it took" (6). This proves that Theo let his haters hurtful chants distract him from his basketball game.

One shocking part was when the plane Avery was standing next to blew up. The point of this attack was the injure Avery in order to later be kidnapped. It said, "As I walked toward the jet, a brutal wind picked up, then gave way to sudden and utter stillness. I heard single, high-pitched beep, and then the world exploded. Into fire. Into nothing" (301.) This shows that Avery was severely hurt in the attack.

One shocking part of the book was when Avery was kidnapped so her father would show up to save her. Avery never grew up with a dad and she hadn't seen "Harry" (her father and Toby Hawthorne) in a very long time. In the book it said, "'Harry.' That was the wrong name, and I knew it, but I couldn't keep the word from bursting past my lips. He's here. He came" (324.) This shows that Toby Hawthorne still cared for Avery.

One shocking part was when Avery said she knew Toby Hawthorne, the uncle who died years back. It turned out that Toby was a man who played a role in Avery's childhood. Her mother would always mysteriously talk about a secret she was keeping. It said, "'I have a secret,' I could hear my mother telling me, 'about the day you were born" (369.) This shows that the Hawthorne family knew about Avery when she very young.

One shocking part of the story was when the poisonous fog attacked Katniss and her group. It was a twist in the games that was not natural. In the text it said, "Something's wrong with this fog....a sickeningly sweet odor begins to invade my nostrils. In the few seconds it takes to rouse them, I begin to blister" (297.) This shows that the Gamemakers are switching the game to make it unnatural and hard to survive.

One interesting part was when Katniss's dress burned into a mockingjay during her pre-Hunger Game interview. As she twirled her wedding dress, burned away into completely black clothes with white wings. It said, "Clothed in black except for the white patches on my sleeves. Or should I say my wings. Because Cinna turned me into a mockingjay" (252.) This shows another way her group is rebelling against the capital.

One shocking part of the story was when Katniss finds out she is going back into the area because of the Quarter Quell. The paper of the Quarter Quell twist read that only past victors must return to the arena. It said, "What does it mean? Existing pool of victors? Then I get it, what it means...I am going back to the arena" (173.) This twist on the story shows that the capitol still has all of the control.

One interesting part of the story was when he told us about how much wizards and witches played a role in his childhood. He and his friends believed in all of the magic because his grandfather would tell them stories. "When the Gule Wamkulu weren't performing, they were looking for young boys to take back to their graveyards" (13.) This shows how magic creatures were all around him as a child.

After the rule that there could be two winners was revoked, this was there split second decision so they could both die or win. In the text it said "I lift my hand to my mouth, taking one last look at the world." (345.) The game makers knew there had to be one winner so they quickly announced that both of them could win.

One shocking part of the story was when Tresh decided to save Katniss from Clove. It was shocking because they were not allies and hadn't talked in the arena. In the text it said, "Clove is dangling a foot off the ground, imprisoned in Thresh's arms. I let out a gasp, seeing him like that, towering over me, holding Clove like a rag doll" (286.) It showed that they were even because of how Katniss took care of Rue.

One shocking part was when Claudius Templesmith said that there had been a rule change that stated there could be two winners from the same district. This was shocking because it showed the people of Panem were bored with the games. It said, "Both tributes from the same district will be declared winners if they are the last two alive" (244.) This shows that the Gamemakers still have power over the Hunger Games.

An interesting part was when Rue told Katniss about the tracker jackers that were above her. As Katniss was escaping the Career pack, she heard Rue next to her. Rue told her about the nest that was above her. It said "Her little hand slides into the open and points to something above my head...one of the Capitol's mutations, tracker jackers" (185.) One important part was when Katniss got everyone looking her way because of her outfit during the ride to the capitol's center. Usually people overlook district 12, but Cinna's creativity with the fire got everyone looking her way. The text said, "'Katniss! Katniss!' I hear my name being called from all sides. Everyone wants my kisses" (71.) Katniss and Peeta made a statement with the fire and them holding hands.

One shocking part was when Katniss volunteered her self to be tribute in the Hunger Games instead of her younger sister, Prim. Katniss was so confused because there were so many different names to be pulled. Katniss alone had her name in the reaping twenty times. She didn't want Prim to die so she volunteered. It said, "There must have been some mistake. This can't be happening. Prim was one slip in thousands" (21.)

An interesting part was when Roger, after trying to steal Mrs. Jones purse, was deciding whether or not to run out of the house. Roger had the opportunity to run out the front door and grab her purse on the way out. The text said "The door was open. He could make a dash for it down the hall. He could run!" (2). This proves that after being captured by Mrs. Jones, Roger struggled with the decision to run out the door.

A disappointing part was when he got the jacket that looked nothing like the one he described. The narrator had described a cool "biker" jacket to his mom but unfortunately she couldn't afford it and got him an ugly jacket instead. In the text it said, "I discovered draped on my bedpost a jacket the color of day-old guacamole" (1). This proves that the narrator was underwhelmed with the jacket he received.
