okay hold ON kiryu definitely overheard them talking in the classroom so he purposefully took this girl here bc he KNEW this is where they’d be and he might need backup. right??? kiryu is so interesting i cannot get a read on him at all. i wonder when we’ll get his backstory bc i know it’s not anytime soon unfortunately

i appreciate that this story takes the time to let these post-fight/arc conversations breathe instead of just rushing to the next thing. crazy that it’s only been TWO DAYS but i love this theme of enduring hope for connection. sakura thinks he’s given up on understanding and being understood but everything he’s said and done has directly contradicted that. he wants to have community!!!! hope is a stubborn one

i am side-eyeing suo so fucking hard bc i noticed in the anime that he rarely eats………wtf is that all about

and bc he was now “the top” and felt like he didn’t have the right to show any weakness, he stamped all that loneliness and sadness and fear down and built a cage around himself. he became his worst nightmare, the exact opposite of the freedom he desired so fiercely. and he just kept pushing everyone away and stagnating in excitement that was now hollow

experiencing this story for the second time in manga format is really making me think more deeply about what exactly choji has been feeling. i think maybe when he got to the top he became disillusioned with it almost immediately bc he had nothing else to strive for. he suddenly had the weight of responsibility on his shoulders and it made him feel so separate from the friends he’d made by originally joining (cont.)

the bite is SO GOOD he’s desperate and rabid and terrified and that action is the perfect symbol for him hitting rock bottom and truly becoming the caged animal that all the shishitoren imagery has been evoking throughout this arc

choji’s absolutely heartbreaking internal struggle is such a great introductory antagonist arc for the series. if you get to the top and gain power but lose sight of the community around you, you’ll end up all alone. but lonely and powerful is a dangerous combo, as evidenced by choji’s apathetic, volatile, unstable actions and fighting style. so well done

the matter-of-fact and a bit teasing yet still supportive way that this omniscient narrator speaks about nakamura gives this manga such a unique tone, i really love it. somehow it also matches the 90s art style perfectly

okay so this is one of the things that was omitted from the anime and i understand why aksdhkajdh not bc it's unrealistic for a teenage boy to fantasize about that stuff but bc it's perhaps a bit too early on??? we barely know nakamura or hirose yet, maybe let's garner a bit more understanding before jumping into the tentacle fantasies yknow. it also calls into question his feelings about his pet octopus.......

this anime floored me in its hilariously absurd but deeply poignant take on a modern gay high school romcom, and i've heard that the manga is.....Different but i am intrigued nonetheless. if it hits even half as hard as the anime did then i'll be thrilled

i love this moment of tamon’s dad talking to the picture bc it really highlights how this story, at its core, isn’t about the supernatural at all. tamon is an incredibly socially anxious kid who is trapped in grief and has coped with it by avoiding it altogether. just like zaki is a depressed kid who couldn’t stand to look at the ugliness of the world. they’re all just lonely kids looking for community

i do think tamon’s mom made the right choice but her delivery leaves a lot to be desired ajznsmxkskxk that panel of tamon ugly crying about being left alone though will never fail to break my fucking heart. and suddenly everything about him makes perfect sense!!! once again, this absolutely absurd and deeply silly manga continues to create some truly emotionally poignant character arcs and scenes

so obsessed with the running theme of everyone instantly falling in love with eugene and wanting to steal him for themselves. and also the boys being so proud like yeah he’s ours actually ☺️☺️☺️

AND WE EVEN GOT THE GAY EYE REFLECTION SHOT??????? oh sports anime how i adore you and your thinly veined homoeroticism

i feel like sakura's ability to inspire his opponents to be their strongest selves through sheer force of will is going to be a theme in this story. he's gonna attract all the freaks and they're all going to fall deeply in love with him. through fighting. literally yay

when i was watching the anime i was already pretty invested up until this point, but i remember that it was THIS fight and this moment of clarity and understanding between togame and sakura that really got me hooked. and it's just as effective in the manga

togame braiding his hair, putting on sunglasses, and trading in his casual flip flops for the more traditional (and brutal) wooden ones is all fantastic symbolism for how he's chosen to become the moon to choji's sun. but all he's actually doing is standing still, just biding his time in the shade and waiting for the sun to come back out all on its own. looking directly at the sun and its pain would hurt too bad

starting this chapter with choji's eyes and how CLEAR and BRIGHT they used to be is just fantastic. and then further showcasing how his eccentric and bubbly personality used to manifest back when he was happy. it's such a stark contrast to how that personality just sits on top of hollowness now. also togame so earnestly calling him the sun????? they're so tragic and gay and no one can convince me otherwise

i really hope we get to see sako again and not just bc he's voiced by chiaki kobayashi

so sakura is just casually bringing out the best and most emotional in suo and all sakura can think about in turn is how he can get suo to take him seriously in a fight…….casually of course

suo ragging on kanuma’s immaturity and seeming almost ageless himself is reminding me so much of zeno. that paired with the kindness and the constant smiles and the emotional intelligence but also the icy wisdom and potential ruthlessness

okay so i am admitting in this very moment that i’m a basic bitch and suo is my favorite character so far. fucking sue me. i just love mysterious, incredibly perceptive and emotionally intelligent characters who have the capacity for great cruelty but choose to be kind most of the time. his design is also sick. AND he’s voiced by mahito’s va so really i stood no chance
