Lisa is starting The Johnson-Sims Feud: Romeo and Juliet, West Texas Style (A.C. Greene Series Book 9)
I've read the Acknowledgments and now I have to look at every photo before I can start Chapter 1 and learn about the feud. I already know this is going to be good.

This is one of those books that, when you have to get up to go pee in the middle of the night, you think, "Okay, I'll read just a few pages" and then you end up being late to work in the morning because you couldn't make yourself stop and go back to sleep.

I think I've already jumbled the inserts. I think I need to do as another reader suggested and take them out, numbering them with page numbers of where in the book they belong. I'm enjoying the story, even with all the back and forth reading involved.

When this book arrived, I was enthralled. I looked at everything tucked inside the pages but only briefly and I made myself wait a day to start reading it because I have a feeling I'm not going to want it to end. Okay, here we go. Bring on this journey!

Reading this at the same time as a biography about Mishima is really interesting and both are so well written.

I started out loving this book - the idea of the family and community story being told by an old man who wants to leave it behind for his son. Now, he's repeated the same story more than once, and I am a bit bored by it.

After 107 pages I am not impressed with Michael Chabon. I think 1) the characters are under-developed 2) the story is stilted and 3) the dialogue is lacking. Problems 1-3 are made more evident by Chabon's overuse of descriptive words, Yiddish words, and especially by the number of times he has one of his characters call anyone and everyone "Yid". People do not talk like that.

I think one should keep a list, not of favorite books necessarily, but a list of books that one could read to know you better, a list of books that speak to you and about you. This would be on my own short list.

I've finished 6 of the lost books so far. The most interesting has been the First and Second Gospel of the Infancy of Jesus Christ attributed to Thomas. It's a little starling to read that Jesus was a bit of a brat. If you ran into him on the playground and knocked him down, he would smite you. Glad they got that under control.

I have to remember to also read the Lost Books of Eden which contains the books left out of the Old Testament as this appears to be books left out of the New Testament.

The characters weren't holding my interest, although the story had enough mystery to it that I was still somewhat interested. I put it down to read other things and, in the meantime, Shelly finished if and told me not to bother reading it. Back on the bookshelf it goes.

The prologue was thought-provoking and a little smarmy. The Goodreads reviews seem to hold that Taleb takes 300 pages to say what could have been said in 5 (like the prologue?). He spends a great deal of time praising himself and his brilliance. I'm going to spare myself from reading further. Someday, maybe I will read the notes at the end.

I've been reading for two days and I don't want to put it down, which speaks well of the writing. Historical fiction is not my usual choice but I find this entertaining and educational, as I stop, now and again, to Google names or events.

I don't think I would like the movie because it's a comical farce, apparently. But this book, from a journalist's perspective is quite fascinating and more than a little scary when you stop to think that all of our futures are, at times, in the hands of damaged men and snake oil salesmen.
