I understand that it's nice to be able to read books and at the same time feel like one might also be the author. This is one such fantasy.

Had a gifted hardback on the shelf for an undisclosed number of years and when I saw gr reviews I decided to take it on the plane for a weekend trip to the UK.

I speak a lot more Russian than I did when I first read this. I've also seen and not yet unseen Stanley Kubrik's cinema adaptation of it, so it's not going as well as the first read, but it's certainly very different. I'm also wondering whether this pidgin style has gone out of fashion?

There's a lot of well known historical examples here and the chase cutting starts when decline went from gradually to suddenly in the mid-2010s. From there on in, it's an 'eye-opener', which is one of those stock phrases of the sarcastic lexicon, in so much as even when it's written in black and white, it's still hard to comprehend just how anyone ever got away with it. In that sense, it's already dead letter!
