Pretty good so far. Wolf Larsen reminds me of Judge Holden as I had heard comparison of before I started this book. (I know Larsen came first)

Both men holding a very nihilistic view of life. They differ as The Judge’s philosophy shows war and tyranny as a purpose and a “God”, holding no regard for anyone. Wolf Larsen seems to have the understanding that life is the cheapest currency and a means to an end.

This book has great characterization. Little plot but the characters and pacing is so entertaining you don’t really mind that much.

After finishing Cormac’s border trilogy and feeling a little underwhelmed I wondered if I even enjoyed his writing style.

He won me back within the first paragraph of this book.

“Finally his own person was even lost to him. Whatever he had been he was no more. He said that like every man who comes to the end of something there was nothing to be done but to begin again.”

I had to reread the paragraph in which the boy kills the wolf a few times to make sure I had it right. It was so unexpected and tragic. I expected the whole of the book to be about the she-wolf and this journey.

McCarthy has several beautifully written passages in this first chapter. Several of which refer to a power in this world nothing can contain, not referring to the wolf, but the evil heart of man.

Reminds me of reading Jack London when I was a kid.
