I’m wine drunk on the bedroom floor and reading you. A type of drunkeness that makes one invincible: enough to start s fighr, to end a fight, to start a love,to end a love, to honestly confess right fully retraxt. Swaging too and fro with you, a new song is playing on the radio, we dance away the years and I feel young again.

“You are Jeff” makes me curl up in a ball and cry

It’s really picking up!! Haller reminds me a lot of Dorian Gray, but with a tinge more nihilism and less pride. I love the conversation bouts he has, and Hermine is SUCH an interesting character!

It currently feels that this story can only end with haller dying or going insane (like prince Myshkin in Dostoevsky’s Idiot), so I’m excited to find out what happens. Also I wonder if Herman was a cuck?

I have only finished the letter to his nephew, and already feel that Baldwin will be one of my favourite essayists going forward. If only I were not in the process of moving houses, I would have bought both this and Giovanni’s room immediately.

The anger, it’s heartbreaking. I cannot help but cry at the way Baldwin writes. Especially those first two pages of the essay - it’s both pain, and love, distilled 3

It’s picking up! Some lovely lines, but it hasn’t quite grown on me

It’s meticulous, and a bit of a surprise! I like it, but I’m struggling to mesh with the tone of the story so far.

Taking the time to write a full review of this, but absolutely a ten out of ten. I don’t think every good story has to be a parable, but I do think every good story has to feel real. And this felt real.

Also why do they all seem to hate Denver so much

Very mixed feelings about Dean and Sal, the unreliable narration is unrelying narrating verily.

About halfway through the book, and I can’t help but like Sal. Or maybe ‘like’ isn’t the word, but if not that, then ‘feel softness for’. He’s flawed, an unreliable narrator, but for me that’s what makes him feel real. I cannot help but think of Holden Caufield from catcher in the Rye, and I say that with some type of heartache in my throat.
