What terrible writing / translating, and she's going to fall for this guy who is controlling and stalkerly. No thanks. This is supposed to be sweet but it's making me want to give up on this book.

Loving this so far but I have two issues with how educators are portrayed:

1) The girls decide to not pay any mind to a recess monitor because "she's not a teacher anyway." This is a huge issue in schools - kids don't listen to adults who aren't teachers. Not okay.

2) The band teacher chooses favorites hardcore. Where was the chair test, lady?

"Vin flipped her hand up and downed the vial of metals..."

Whyyyy.

"Elend shrugged. 'He's a paraplegic. What's the going to do? Bite us?"'

Um, excuse me? First sexism, now ableism. There won't be racism because everybody is white in Sanderson's word, koloss excluded.

"Vin immediately downed her last vial of metals."

Also, Allrianne and Beldre are in the same room for the first time, and Allrianne immediate hates her. For no reason. This also highlights how infrequently women are in the same room, let alone speaking to each other.

Oh please stop. "...then downed a metal vial..."

And you thought we were done. Hah. "Vin downed another vial to replenish her steel."

"She downed one of these as she scrambled across the deck of the rowboat." Sigh.

Please stop with the terrible similes. "The sun seem to grow hotter and the mists finally retreated, vanishing like water evaporating on a warming pan. The sunlight hit her like a wave and Vin turned, watching the mists go, their death like an echoing scream." And that's all in the same paragraph! That's not to mention loads of comma splices. WHO IS THIS MAN'S EDITOR?

Actual quote: "Stars blazed in the sky above him like a million tiny suns." Boy have I got news for you, Mr. Sanderson. Stars ARE suns! And suns are also stars!

I'm going to document every time someone "downs" liquid. Page 46, "She pulled out a small vial of liquid...and downed it in a single gulp..."

Here we go, friends!

Well I haven't felt disgusted in a few hundred pages, so things are looking up.

Two female characters have appeared. One is described as: "long braid, firm chest, homely features." That's it. That's all we know of her.

The second woman is a prostitute who is described as being too old, wrinkly, and saggy in her advanced age of LATE TWENTIES.

Also, Vin wants to cut her hair, but Elend likes it long, so she suffers her long hair.

I'm so disgusted that I kind of want to stop.

You guys. Another woman has shown up. The first commentary is that she isn't pretty. And guess what. Vin hates her.

"She had to learn to be like other people. Elend deserved a woman who was normal." Pardon me while I go throw up.

I'm really enjoying this so far, but there're some problems:

1. The whole Lord Ruler business is a giant lesson about worshipping false idols. I don't want a 10 Commandments lesson.

2. Nobody simply drinks. Everybody "downs" their beverages. Find a few more synonyms, Sanderson.

3. "How had Elend been able to evoke her true self so quickly and thoroughly?" Oh please. I'm not here for a boy-saves-girl trope.

And there it is: the author's bias against vegans and vegetations. That's unfortunate. And she seems ignorant to the issue of overfishing. But damn can this woman write.

So frustrated at Finley's awful grandparents.

I'm making progress, I swear.

There's so much snarling and hissing in this series that it seems like I'm reading about cats. Has anybody told Maas that it's weird for humans to do these things?

OH MY GOD CAN'T CELAENA HAVE ONE FEMALE FRIEND WHO ISN'T DECEPTIVE AND CONNIVING? This type of storytelling is downright petty and distasteful. Hopefully I'll be proven wrong.
