revisiting this book because I think it was fourth grade? when we read this? at the part that's haunted me the most about it. this visual still so vivid it came to me when I heard Florence + the Machine's "What the Water Gave Me" over a decade later for the first time

i'm so glad i'm tandem reading this, sure the words sing on the page, but the audiobook narration made me loop this single paragraph over and over to relive it. not that it said anything special, but that it was so familiar and real that i could see it before me with the characters recasted from people i knew.

genuinely it hasn't happened once and i love the feel of the characters, so natural for all they are

The sassiness and lightheartedness of all the personal morbidity always makes the moments of soft vulnerability hit me like a freight train and i find myself suddenly sobbing over one sentence for a whole day

just mention of "are you even [half your ethnicity]" and i had to pause to bawl for a moment. And, this one is just. mind boggling in a way that i'd never considered as a nonblack poc

pausing midchapter to say, i went into this blind so i didn't know each chapter was going to be a different character perspective (though it tracks), but while the first character was emphatically relatable, this guy has moments but MOSTLY makes me wanna bash my own head in with frustration dklgnslg

ANYWAY I like the village that makes stars, so far its my favorite area.
