Danielle Walker is starting The Bear and the Piano
Thoroughly enjoyed the message and flow of this story. The bear left his cozy, small home community in the forest to venture out into the big, bright light city to pursue his talents as a pianist. Like many humans I know, leaving home was scary because there’s no place like it in which he realizes years of performing for the world. His tribe was there to welcome him back to the woods when he visited.

Who doesn’t love tacos!? Dragons for sure do! However, they’re not too fond of spicy toppings that are typically found on them. So, beware or little fires everywhere!

Danielle Walker is starting We Don't Eat Our Classmates (Penelope Rex, #1)
This a great read aloud for those on a first grade level. It is a story about forming friendships and having self-control. Penelope, a Dino beginning school, initially struggles to gain friends because she eats them! Along the way, she learns to fight the urge to eat others after being eaten herself by a fish. She had a taste of her own medicine which warranted better understanding. In the end, she makes friends.

Antsy rediscovering his childhood joy reminds me of my current stance. Loreda discovering her voice and her purpose is where I stand too! Finding positive role models to channel… yeah, this feels familiar for me and my journey. My dad died, so it wasn’t a voluntary abandonment but nonetheless I felt abandoned. All that anger, his children feel… I feel that. Mom having to be strong… mad at her… I get it lol

Danielle Walker is starting Frida Kahlo and Her Animalitos
Fun story about Frida’s relationships with her pets. It tells of her similarities with them and how she finds comfort, through the ups and downs of her life, from them as well as from painting! Creativity led her life into worlds of imagination and possibilities when her reality wasn’t as colorful as her paintings. Nonetheless she sought out beauty through and through. Now she is recognized globally for hers.

Ethel Payne’s stories were birthed during the civil rights movement. Her first publication featured soldiers in Japan! She stood in courage when she asked several presidents several questions regarding African Americans.

Danielle Walker is starting Equality's Call: The Story of Voting Rights in America
Equality’s call is rights for all! This short read chronologically tells of voting rights in America! The pictures showcase diversity and the beauty of a multicultural country. We all deserve a say-so no matter our race, status, or age! Legally, I understand the 18year requirement but still. Freedom should be available to all.

Danielle Walker is starting This Is the Rope: A Story from the Great Migration
In this book, I am reminded of the elders in my family and their resourcefulness. I am reminded to maximize whatever I have as my family sure did.. they stretched their makings, doings, and earnings. And quite frankly, what a remarkable set of folk. Generous as well. Formal education was not dealt in their cards but my goodness did they become skilled through pure talent and repetition.

Danielle Walker is starting Going Down Home with Daddy
This instantly takes me back to childhood and the traditions my family holds dear. The story aligns with my black heritage: traveling to grandparents’ house to play with my cousins while the older relatives cooked, joked, or played cards. Man. The joys of togetherness was expressed here & the hopefulness of continued fellowships for years to come was too. I enjoyed this read intended for youth but really for all.

Awesome! It’s a quick and easy read about the importance of Juneteenth. It explains, in brief, what the holiday is celebrated for and how it became to be. Quick history: Abe Lincoln believed in an UNITED States of America so he declared the Emancipation Proclamation after a Civil War broke out between the north and south due to a disagreement regarding slaves’ freedom.
