I liked the creature. I wish we got more creature and less boring cliche cultists. I wonder why the hungry creature lived so far underground. Is there a thriving ecosystem under there?

The villains are comically evil and are less characters than plot devices. And the dialogue isn’t great. I’m still having a pretty good time though.

I like the forest vibes and the dog, but the main character is hard to sympathize with. Also being narratively rewarded for being standoffish to coworkers who had done nothing wrong at the time bc they are now mustache twirling villains. Also are we ever going to revisit the inappropriate violent and lustful intrusive thoughts they had for the first couple chapters or are we not talking about that anymore?

Lucy’s grief when her sister died and now she’s being offered a chance to have her back, but it’s twisted, but she’ll take it because it’s better than not having her at all

Noah is MEAN and SULLEN and CHEATING ON HIS MONSTER GF

I’m finding Noah a bit sullen and self absorbed and he’s a bit hard to root for. Also I’m skipping all the sex stuff.

If Nick has been an agent of the house the whole time, why did he act so surprised/disgusted when they arrived? Why was he still kind here and there? He already had them in his clutches, so there’s no need to keep up the ruse. Maybe we’ll see! I hope love saves the day. My rating will be higher if love saves the day.

A lot of this is about middling no sleep quality. This is a lot less scary and intriguing than the no sleep story it was based off of. A lot of these rooms are just, this fucked up thing is happening!!!! And yes, it’s a very fucked up scenario. Just awful. But that doesn’t make for an enjoyably scary or engaging book

I like having fox imagery for Nick, but it’s very on the nose. He did this like a fox. He looked like a fox. He was like a fox. It’s the overexplaining again

The over explaining of things is also a bit much. It would be nice if he would trust our intelligence. We remember that thing from a couple pages ago, don’t worry

The characters are flat and kinda caricatures (lore), but it’s sweet when they’re nice to each other. Very crude. A lot of swearing and sexual references when there doesn’t need to be. The dialogue isn’t very believable. Meme speak keeps being used in inappropriate times “you’re in your Diet Coke era” “chaotic neutral” “unalived”

Sarita is pissing me off!!! The only thing she’s been doing is directionlessly entertaining thoughts of scaring ghosts to prove her power. Also I can’t name really anything about her personality except that she daydreams about power, and is now acting on it to harass the local supernatural beings.

Ugh the potential is so cool. The roar in her ears is the prayers of a thousand devout followers??? The horror of being Mary Magdalene!! That’s awesome! But the momentum keeps getting gutted by long ramblings and sarita hasnt, like, done anything yet. Except daydream about weaponizing Angelo.

Herrah’s descent into being a monster is honestly really cool. But still, this is a vampire cult novel and I was hoping for a character based novel centered around a guardian angel who doesn’t understand human morals and a vengeful woman. All sarita has done is ask Tori to tell her some vague things about spells. After that awesome line in ch1!!!!

So so wordy. Some of it’s beautiful but it’s really stalling the progression. Also, Sarita is less cool than I thought she was at first (she went on about wanting revenge? We’ve been dithering?) also I was most excited about Angelo but we’re halfway through and have barely heard anything more about him

Adam is such human garbage. He’s controlling, negging Sage, shaming women for having sex on the first date which he ALSO DOES. This better have a damn twist and he better be the villain or I’m taking SUSAN to a women’s studies class, forcibly.
