This book is a treasure for young therapists beginning their journey. Here one finds genuine insights into real and raw moments within the counsellor-client relationship (or fellow travellers as Irv beautifully describes). Tossing the clinical, cold and structured forms of therapy work and being willing to embrace the human, dark, electric and profound feelings we all experience in life and on the path to healing.

The horrors of this book aren’t of those that are obvious. It’s a creeping, gnawing knowing of Louis living in hypocrisy, non empathetic to the validity beneath the unpredictable grey of death Rachel feels. He prefers a rational perspective to shield his own fear re: the consequences of loss. A blindness that keeps me on edge the more he is forced to face those horrifying, relatable + close to home consequences.

Anxiously excited and nervous to finally give this one a read. I’ve heard about it since moments of spooky ghost story telling around campfires in my childhood. It’s about grief, past trauma, fear and the horrors that live within and without. After reading through King’s introduction at the book store today, I was inspired to give it a read, finally.
