Looked up the actual Lucy Gray poem to compare and I love that the first two changes to the original words are to make the poem more geographically accurate to District 12, which we know is in the Appalachian range of the US, and to prevent the Covey from singing a slur at full volume on stage--

I haven't seen the film since it was in theatres but I will give it props that it changed "The Old Therebefore" to be the finale of the games, instead of a spike in adrenaline *near* the end.

The deadpan reading *really* takes the oomph out of the songs.

The agony of watching it take just a bit too long for Coriolanus to figure out what the hell Dr. Gaul is planning with the snakes like she didn't all but say to his face what she's about to do--

My only knock so far is that the other Capitol students seem to be really chill about a *second* missing student. I get they're probably wrapped up in mourning, but it is a little odd that there's been no conversation.

Actually snorted the narrator is doing a Kennedy impression for the president of Panem--

And just like so many tragedies, the base of it is someone Not Connecting The Dots. It feels so Greek, the way Coriolanus' hubris destroys *everyone* for such a long time.

There is more depth in 5 chapters of this book than there are in 200 *pages* of Starship Troopers. Coriolanus is so deeply slimy and calculating, and hearing the way he justifies his petulant internal tantrums and weaponizes his trauma against the people he ACTUALLY has things in common with is fascinating and horrible, I love it and this horrible fucking boy.

Lucy Gray *immediately* fucking with Coriolanus is so good. Get him, girl, fuck with his mind and emotions.

Superimposing the music from the movie over the rote reading of "Nothin' You Can Take From Me," songs in audiobooks is so funny.

Me, coming back to Collins' clear passion and effort for world-building and scene-setting after tormenting myself with Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein: It's like a reward.

Jesus fucking CHRIST we can’t go one chapter without a hate crime. Not even a page into the final chapter and Heinlein refers to an Indigenous American as looking “just as harmless as his scalp-hunting ancestors” I’m so glad Heinlein is dead.

I didn't think the movie would be a perfect adaptation of the book and god I hate how right I am about it. This book is a fucking *slog* with all of the procedure I've had to sit through. It's just a bunch of "yes sir" and "no sir" and wandering around. Could have called this "Space Boot Camp" and it would be a more accurate title than "Starship Troopers"

Fun Fact: Did you know that Starship Troopers is narrated by Richard Reed, who also did narration for a bunch of the Warhammer books?

"Why not make military service something everyone has to do and then give everyone the right to vote instead of having people volunteer for service?" My brother in Christ there are so many people signing up for the military for citizenship rights already that the military has to *make up jobs* and ways to get people to quit before they ship out, That Is Already The State Of Things.

3/5ths of the way through this book and only now are we starting to get the paper-thin reasons as to why Citizenship is such a MASSIVE goal that the military has started to make up bullshit jobs to accommodate the amount of sign-ups they get.
