Takval is close to becoming an awesome character. Thera is pretty great but can seemingly do no wrong.

The character of Thoryo is actually very interesting and offers a novel take on what it means to be human and how we take so much we experience for granted

Zomi’s story is much more emotional and personal than anything from book 1 and the political intrigue is much more developed. Things are explained to us but through the eyes of children rather than direct exposition.

Zomi is a much more interesting character than anything we saw in grace of kings. This has started much much stronger. The only thing I thought was lame was the orchid teaching the god of war how to be a god of war. The wisdom from the orchid was too stupid a concept for me to ignore it.

Significant improvement on the first. Both the prose and the structure are much more enjoyable.

Up to about the point where Risana is introduced, the book is extremely flat with shallow characters, uninteresting and wordy prose, and although lots of things happen as the story progresses at breakneck speed, there is no emotional weight to anything that happens.

Two female characters have now been introduced and I’m starting to enjoy the book more. Coincidence?
