On the mission a scientist and a couple of security members get eaten by creepers while 7 and another guard escape thanks to berto flying overhead. 7 gave the scientist a warning about his gear and it’s unclear if that would have helped him.

7 has said several times that he doesn’t think burners work to kill creepers and this is proven true but I don’t think we know why he knows this yet

7 gets pulled into field duty where he finds one of the crew members has been turned to slag after a creeper got into the station. Marshall wants to expedite the defense process so they go on a mission to secure a sample.

So far no mention of the Marshall having a sauce obsessed wife like the movie. Weird choice to add that in…

Aka every iteration of Mickey after 1 is a soulless abomination.
Most people think he was conscripted from prison so they tend to leave him alone.

M7 and berto get the rations cut by 20% because they wasted m7. Kindof silly to punish the guy who died for dieing

7&8 talk plans about how they are going to manage this but they don’t think it through much. 8 seems a bit smarter then 7

Mickey1 goes through expendable training that covers the basics of how the ship works. The thinking is that if he knows some of it now he won’t need to be taught when the shit hits the fan. This training also includes shooting yourself in the head once you complete the first memory backup. Fortunately for 1 it’s just a test and the gun doesn’t go off.
The Marshall is deeply religious and thinks 1 sole/body

Mickey7&8 rock Paper sissies about who will be turned to paste which 8 wins but feels bad about. They desire to stick it out for a bit and split there meager rations for a while.
8 goes to bed while 7 gets breakfast (discounted meal paste).B lies to him about how he died which he catches. And his GF tells him the truth. B feels that something is off but can’t quite place it. B is also an asshole

Despite repeated attempts of everyone he knows (2 people) to convince him not to sign up as an extendable Mickey goes through with it. He feels that between being massively in debt and being otherwise a mediocre member of society that this gives him a chance to do something with his life. Meanwhile berty is successful at everything he does and wins the right to board on merit

Reading this after the movie so I’ll be calling out differences as I notice them.

Mickey is an extendable meaning he has given permission for his memories and body to be reproduced upon his death.
We open on Mickey 7 who has fallen into an ice cave. His best friend and girlfriend have very different reactions but both leave him to die. He is saved by a big ass bug and makes it home to find Mickey 8

Despite the barbaric nature of many pirates the court cases regarding their guilt were often somewhat fair. The Pirates were not allowed legal counsel but they were given the chance to prove their innocence based on testimony of others and crew of the boats they ransacked. It was often common for the state to provide religious services in the hopes they’re souls can be saved by confession

As the wars England and surrounding nations began to end in the early 1720s the this began to free up the massive warships that were previously occupied. These massive 60+ gun ships instantly outclassed any pirates ships and there larger numbers made patrolling and convoying much easier. This along side the increased bounty on pirates rapidly deminished the threat

BB fired his broadsides filled with 8 pound shot, nails and other scrap metal at the following ship killing 5 men on board. The rest hid under the deck before springing an ambush on the pirates that boarded. BB was shot 5 times before dueling swords with the captain. He told the captain “nice job lad” before having his head cut off. The captain hung his head from the stern

The governor of N Carolina commissioned a ship to capture blackbeard. When they found his ship “the adventure” it was under manned according to its normal capacity. Early in the morning all the pirates were hungover but still able to avoid immediate confrontation. While evading capture they ran into a sand barge where the battle took place. BB was reported to say. “Damnation take my soul if I accept quarter”

As we have learned it’s more likely that they just spent it on boobs and brews. It was noted early that a pirate in Jamacia offered a women £500 to see her naked. With inflation each euro back then is worth about 55 today meaning he offered her the equivalent of £25k

Of the £400k he allegedly made during his time as a pirate only £14k was recovered. This is the main reason that people now associate pirates with barrier treasure. Due to the size of the trial and the notability of his patrons many this was huge news causing many people to search for kidds hidden treasure.

Also notable. When Blackbeard was captured his boat and goods sold for only £2.5k. More hidden treasure?

In need of friends to help him, he returned to Massachusetts to visit his patron, now the governor of ms, NH, NY. Along the way he made several, curious, business deals with old freinds, vastly overpaying for goods. His patron had him arrested and sent back to England for trial where he was held in solitary confinement for 2 years before sentencing. Not allowed a lawyer he poorly represented himself.

They attacked a reading boat owned by the east India trading company (owned by the king. Whoops) followed by a few smaller French vessels. The crew had turned nearly mutinous and Kidd had to become cruel to control his men. He ended up killing his first made by smashing his skull with a ring of iron (in self defense of course).
All the time he was slowly raking up a reputation, and a rap sheet.

The difference being that the prizes secured by the pirates would be owned by capital investors and the king would get a stake. The crew was not allowed to take any portion of the prize until it was sold legally.
They also received no pay until the goods were sold.

While an interesting idea this put Kidd and his crew in a time crunch to find a prize and fast. They ended up being….creative….with the rules

Captain Kidd, one of the most notorious pirates of history, maintained that he was not a pirate but and opportunistic businessman who acted in self defense when breaking the law.
The Massachusetts governor had come up with a proposal for a man, with full rights signed by the king of England’s, to hunt down pirates and the nation’s enemies’ ships. In a way this was just piracy squared

Part of the reason carpenters were so valued was they were able to safely gut the internals of a ship that was intended to haul cargo. Removing walls, opening holes for guns and keeping the boat in good shape.

Pirates often had to beach there ships to check the bottom’s condition and scrape off all the seaweed that would otherwise cause drag

Realizing how little I care to read about pirate movies in the early 1900s. Snooze.

Pirate ships neeeed to have 3 attributes. Fast- sea worthy and armed to the teeth. Pirates , by the nature however could not afford to have a ship commissioned so they took what they could get. Often much smaller then those seen in movies do to there maneuverability

The end of the golden era of piracy was perhaps started with a massive earthquake in Jamaica which flooded or destroyed the majority of the long standing pirate communes. This was viewed as an opportunity to stamp out piracy and the English king appointed captain Hornigold (very pirate sounding) to govern the island, fortify defenses and limit the crime. It only kindof worked

The punishment for being found guilty of piracy was also heavy handed. Often the captain would be suspended in a metal cage unable to move at a port untill they died of starvation and the flesh began to rot. If they failed to plead guilty or otherwise they were tied to the ground and rocks would be added slowly untill the man or women was crushed to death or they plead.

Often when a pirate would take a boat there was nothing anyone could do to stop it. We envision them as quick affairs based on movies but often they would take there time sometimes spending days squeezing the crew for all they could. This often involved a heavy amount of torture when the invaded crew was not helpful. Torture seemed to be a much more common affair especially with merchant crews (Hense the mutinies)

Pirates needed carpenters and coopers (barrel makers) and often took these skilled men from their prizes (surrendering ships). Other booty included household items that pirates had a hard time trading for on land including candles, rope, ship repair parts, pots, pans, rations. There goal was treasure but hey, a man’s got to eat.

Black flags often meant that surrender would be offered. In fact many pirates would fire one warning shot showing the black flag and expect surrender. It was common for quickly surrendering ships to be treated without hostility.

The origin of the Jolly Roger is believed to come from a nickname of the devil old Roger

The flags often showed symbols of death and time to strike fear and haste into surrendering ships
