carl sagan describes in chapter 1 how he meets a man who’s driving him to an event and he asks if he can ask him a few questions about science, and he says yes. the man goes on to ask questions about pseudoscience and sagan highlights how people can be really smart/well-read but are misled by popular media because often science is much less exciting and i already feel like everyone needs to read this book

when i read the fellowship of the ring i remember wondering how it was relevant to the story that tom bombadil saved the hobbits after being captured by the barrow wights, and now knowing that merry could only have injured the witch king by using a barrow wight sword makes a lot more sense. there is not a single detail in these books that goes unchecked.
also “witch king” more like BITCH KING!

i love that treebeard is like “i can tell this meeting of the ents is making you hasty hobbits impatient, here’s a similarly hasty ent who i feel you’ll get along with” and then the hasty ent is like “they call me quickbeam because i once said “yes” to an elder ent before he finished asking his question” lmao

legolas being able to sleep while walking around with his eyes open is equally terrifying and also really cool. i have a newfound appreciation for the elves
