The run on sentences are crazy. Again with the prose, I’m feeling like the way this is written reads very juvenile? Like I’ve read fanfics about Minecraft with nicer sentence structure and less corny dialogue.

A lot of things so far have felt like convenient plot devices to ensure Violet succeeds, it doesn’t exactly feel earned. Also, it seems like these teachers promise retribution but don’t give it??

I’m not really jiving with this prose, it feels almost corny to me? Lots of cliches building I fear. I’m enjoying it a little more now that I’m not taking it seriously, but like… what. is. going. on.

I. Hate. These. Sentences.

Violet is very much giving fanfic Mary-Sue. The EYEROLL she got from me after that “for once I’m grateful to be shorter than most” line was major 😭

Also there’s so much cliche dialogue? I think if I reframe reading this like watching a corny movie maybe I’ll have more fun, I just can’t take it seriously ://

Finishing my thoughts before I start the next chapter, more as a reference for me after I finish the book:

Violet will be somehow naturally be good at everything, even though narratively we’ve been told she’s been trained for something else her whole life

Xaden will be her love interest and they’ll have an enemies to lovers arc or something, potentially a love triangle with Dain

She gets a special dragon

I am so sorry to all the Fourth Wing enjoyers out there but I am struggling with this book already 😭 it’s only the first chapter though, so my feelings could change. My feelings, though, so far:

1. Violet is giving “my mom sold me to One Direction” energy. She’s teeny-tiny and has cool unique hair and is so pale..ok

2. Xaden (god help us) is definitely a love interest isn’t he

FUCK i left myself on a cliffhanger FUCK !! “More than one of them would love to tell the tale”??! Very huge sucker for when a book does this, I love to ponder and be afraid. There’s gore!! There’s some more action!! What does her hair have to do with their secrets/death!?

I’m liking the prose compared to some of the other fantasy excerpts I read in the bookstore. We definitely have a love interest and I feel like I know where we’re going now, but I just want to get out of Valentina’s house!!!

Very curious to see where this goes. The man with the red beard seems like he’s gonna fuck shit up. Very exciting, it feels like this book is starting to pick up and I am interested to learn more about Luzia 😚
