The first two chapters helped begin to reframe how to look at midlife crises. The wall you hit at the beginning is a step of growth and not something to break down about. These comments aren’t long enough :(

2/2 so far, the book has been straight forward about only truly knowing ourselves in relationship to our Creator. But it’s been helpful to engage with the idea of “accepting myself” first to then truly recognize what’s good and what’s sinful before turning to Jesus (and the ongoing cycle of repentance and grace). Simply a new way I haven’t thought about before.

I’ve appreciated re-framing how we can engage with our being and sinful nature/habits.
“To truly know something about yourself, you must accept it. Even things about yourself that you most deeply want to change must first be accepted—even embraced…and the self you must accept is the self that you actually and truly are—before you start your self-improvement projects!” 1/2

From what I’ve read so far, it feels like a similar (and more approachable) introduction and proposition as J.I. Packer’s “Knowing God”. We have lots of knowledge ABOUT God but do we personally know him? Have we experienced his goodness? I’m interested to see where Benner takes the rest of this book

I’ve known that it’s by the grace of God that I’ve come to faith in Jesus, but I think chapters 2 and 3 are great reads to further understanding this! Something here clicked for me and it makes way more sense now.
