I've been working my way through the twelve book Olympians series by George O'Conner (https://www.goodreads.com/series/6928...). It's a comic book take on the myths surrounding the major ancient Greek gods. I think my favorite books so far are Artemis, Hades and Hermes, though I've found all but Zeus super enjoyable. Each volume can be read in an evening and there's reading notes at the end. Try it!

I find that I'm not writing as many reviews as I used to. Not sure why. But if you're someone I follow and you'd like to know why I liked or dislike a particular book that I've rated, message me. Hope you're all finding good things to read whether or not you post ratings or reviews here!

I'm currently reading the Jan 15, 2022 issue of the UK science magazine New Scientist, one of many magazines available to many Alaskans through Alaska's Digital Library at adl.overdrive.com. What are you reading when Goodreads doesn't think you're reading?

Quite delightful so far. My spouse and I are listening to the audiobook version. The narrator sounds a bit like Patrick MacNee of the 1960s Avengers to me. Which to me is a bonus.

So far we've been through metal, paper and concrete. Author does a great job of being informative AND communicating his sense of wonder and awe about what these materials have done for humankind.

Just finished the intro. Author makes a compelling case that despite the fact the 1918 was a year of "World War", deaths from flu were the real story outside of Europe and North America. This book was written in 2017, so it won't have an ax to grind about the current pandemic.

So far, another good job in bringing historical documents to life in novel form. Both Churchill and Goring were weirder than I had supposed

Just finished chapter 1. The scariest thing about is book is that it was written in 2008, before Barack Obama became President.

Continue to be impressed with how author makes Bible characters come alive.

Only finished the introduction but looks promising.

I was impressed enough by this book to buy it when my library loan ended even though I'm only a quarter of the way through the book. Really fleshes out first century Palestine and the historical Jesus for me.

Collins is still quite engaging and I'm impressed with his quiet competence and humbleness. It would have been great to find this book much earlier. I'm grateful to have found it now.

Book is holding my interest. Best line so far "We are Franciscans. Our guests are not."

Just finished chapter three. The author's is engaging and shows humility. Also interesting to hear the different things people in 1964 did not know about spaceflight or the Moon. Collins serves this up in an accessible way.

Promising beginning. I enjoyed the thoroughness of the author's introduction.

I wanted to like this book, I really did. And parts of it glowed. But the main reason I was interested in looking at this book was to read the quotes from all the different wisdom traditions Tolstoy used and maybe track some of them down. But as Tolstoy makes very clear in his introduction, the quotes are often entirely paraphrased and translators are very unlikely to find the original. Ok for others. Not for me.

I revised my book challenge downward from 82 books (five more than I read last year) down to 24. I got tired of feeling anxious about how far behind I was when I signed in. But don't worry I'm still reading. Sometimes I'm re-reading books, which I don't usually note here. Currently I'm re-reading the Mage Winds series by Mercedes Lackey.

Powerful. Silicon Valley could have been different.

I've been given a lot to think about so far. Also, credible explanations of why midterms and local elections have such poor turnout.

Great so far. Refreshingly plausible.
