What I don’t like in this book is Orwell pretty blatant disdain for working class people. He says that the only possibility for revolution is in the proles but depicts them as ignorant, if they’re men, and the women seem to be basically disposable sex objects to the main character

— he obviously has nothing to do with the crime and that’s obvious and they found the guy so what? and the constant repetition of going to police station then going to dinner with Ellen then naturally he gets stopped and she scared and blah blah blah

— for themselves and having a black character explain to themselves they are scared to do this or do that because they are black constantly feels less like you are writing from the perspective of a black person and more like you are writing a black character and explaining their experiences for your white audience. Also I don’t feel like the mystery is very strong at least at this point in the story —

I feel like this book reads like a Sunday special about racism in the police force and a lot of the characters feel like cardboard stock characters and I don’t really feel connected to the story or the main character. Also I feel like you can tell that this story is written by a white woman, the constant this is happening because i’m black is not relatable to me? or am i crazy I feel like some scenes can speak -

My mother encouraged one to be optimistic when, crippled with arthritis and dying, she asserted the infinite value of each instant; but her vain tenaciousness also ripped and tore the reassuring curtain of everyday triviality.
