A decent book, anecdotal and sometimes interesting. But felt like I was on a exercise bike--pedaling, pedaling--and going nowhere.

Two recommendations: "Cockroaches" by Nordic noir writer Jo Nesbo; "The crane wife" by Patrick Ness (American expat in London). Totally different, both very enjoyable. The latter, based on a Japanese fairy tale, is magical and sometimes wickedly funny. When did you last read a book about "forgivness."

Three books I ant to recommend: THE GOOD LORD BIRD by James McBride (recent winner of Nat'l Book Award in fiction); BLACK SKIES by Arnaldur Indradison (Icelandic noir); and mostly recently THE HIRED MAN by Aminatta Forna--this one, set in Croatia circa 2007, takes my breath away--five stars. Why have't I heard of her before! She's a Brit (Scottish-Sierra Leone--well respected there, but kinda of a secret here.
