This was the defining novel of my 20s. But for some reason, I have been unable to re-read it since. I keep starting and abandoning it. Helprin's writing is as wonderful as I remember, but the unvarnished romanticism no longer feels real to me, maybe? I dunno.

This is my 4th time through, this time with the Katz translation

I'm through the first volume. Reports of this book's difficulty are exaggerated. There's a lot of new terms to learn, but I'd heard it was positively Pynchonian.

Brilliant book. Not sure why it's taking me so long to read it.
