The concept is really interesting! I think we’re in the middle of rising action? A lot of the book has been getting Creighton to where he is now. Currently, he’s in a position where a lot more action can start happening.

Sophie is my favorite character! She’s so bitter, but hey I would be too. Dr. Franklin helping her better her character is funny. Especially because she doesn’t always watch what she says.

I loved this book! It was fun, and Rocky is an absolute gem.

But I'm not a big fan of the ending. It's a little anticlimactic and leaves me with one big question unanswered. Did Earth survive? Ryland's alive, but what about the rest of humanity? It feels like the book just cuts off at a certain point. I do think the decision to go back and save Rocky was sweet though. Just wish there was more I guess.

Born to float around space with three human crew members; forced to hover in a planet's atmosphere dangling a 10 kilometer chain while holding a human and an Eridian. This is the Frankenstein the Hail Mary has become.

Also, my boy Rocky better not be dead. He made a good tactical choice (kinda), but he better not die. I will fight someone if he does. I don't know who, but I will.

Rocky lives for 6 times as long as we do, sees using sound, watches people sleep, is unable to wake up during his entire sleep cycle (hence the watching bit), is an engineer, has self esteem issues, and just learned about radiation.

Bro is alive because the thing killing all the stars is radiation resistant, and he was near it. Rocky is alive by sheer luck.

Anyway, I really like Rocky. He's pretty fun.

I'm just as delighted by Rocky's existence as Ryland is. He's met intelligent life!! However, they can't ever actually be in the same room as each other which is a bummer :( but they have sign language! Kinda. Rocky does jazz hands and Ryland does a thumbs up. But! Their second is 2 our our seconds. and they have like 6 hours in a day! There's so much to be excited about when learning about the little spider dude lol

You start think its silly and then you're horrified. Then Mr. Pilkington walks in and makes you feel sick, because if these were real people (and even with context of them being animals), we should be calling for this regime's downfall. But they're not. They're supporting horrible working conditions. Supporting blatant disregard for human rights. It's sick, and it's what totalitarianism is. Horrible.

Is it bad to say that I really liked this book, even though I read it for school? Especially the ending. It's a little book with a lot to say. I liked yelling at the characters. I liked making comparisons to real life totalitarianism and dictatorships (especially about the time period this is written in, even if I don't know much about it).

I think Ryland is one of my favorite protagonists ever. Love that his motivation isn’t just to save the world. He’s doing it so the kids he teaches won’t have to face a post-apocalyptic world.

I didn’t comment on this earlier, but the first person present tense (what do I call this) POV makes perfect sense for this story. I haven’t read a book like this before, and it’s fascinating.

I live for this guy’s narration with its random funny bits. It’s probably because Ryland is a teacher. He literally goes “let’s see who else is here—aaaand they’re dead.”

Also, can we talk about how a middle school science teacher got caught up in this? And was the first person to discover aliens? Absolute goals right there. Imagine being able to say you were taught by the guy who discovered aliens!!!

I could go on and on about it, but that would spoil this book. Instead, you should just read it yourself! It’s such a fun read!

Anyways, I love this book. I was at least a little attached to most of the main cast, and the villain POVs were also entertaining, even if I hated their guts. There aren’t any unanswered questions, which is pretty good for a book like this. I love the found family the kids have, and the promise of a future for each of them.

The Institute just learned what happens when you mess with the South and I loved every moment of it.

SPOILERS! (It’s a reference that spoils the point of the Institute)

I THINK IM AT THE HALFWAY MARK. ALSO I NOW KNOW WHERE TIM COMES IN. ITS A LITTLE OBVI BUT IDRC! I would kill for Avery; he makes me so happy. My old favorite character was not a character I would kill for. Avery is. The Institute is a bit like The Order of the Pack from the Lunar Chronicles. It’s pretty cool and almost 100% what I was expecting.

Luke is now the second longest staying resident of the Front Half. He was the new kid at the start of this. All but one of my favorite characters is back there. My leading theory for this place is that it’s a super soldier program. It would explain why they’re doing Luke’s “eye tests.”Avery is such an important player and he has no clue. He can reach the Back Half. If they get out, they have him to thank.

I HATE YOU MRS SIGSBY. GO AWAY. GO ANYWHERE BUT HERE. “Everything I tell you is the truth.” Cut the bullcrap. “We’re not murders, Luke.” It’s not like there’s an entire chapter dedicated to killing his parents. I don’t know what to believe.

Also, Maureen still sucks. Like, seriously? Spying on kids? You absolute jerk.

Luke is a gem. He’s also learning how people react to him being smart (often with distress) which is really sad. ALSO. He doesn’t know his parents are dead! He’s thinking about what they think and has no clue that they’re six feet under!
Kalisha is interesting. She’s the longest staying resident of the Front End, but she’s only been there a month. They don’t need these kids for long, and it scares me.

Tim is an interesting character. I don’t know where exactly he fits in but he’s interesting. Impulsive (which gets him in a bit of trouble sometimes), but decisive (which makes him a good cop, and probably saves more lives than not). The impulsivity isn’t necessarily bad either, since it worked out when he was making his way to DuPray.

I can tell the difference in style between YA and Adult fiction. I like it!

I should read the fourth book tomorrow :)

that scene where they kidnapped Kai was really funny and kinda therapeutic? I just needed him and Cinder to interact again ;-; that relationship is by far the messiest in this series for many reasons.
Thorne continues to be my favorite character, despite his…questionable…actions.

I have theories about Ran and Wolf. They’re definitely connected but I don’t know how. Also I think I know why Scarlet’s grandma was kidnapped. Lots of theories in these chapters.

THE ONLY AND ONLY IKO IS BACK YAYYY! She’s a spaceship now tho so it’s kinda weird. I love her either way.

I love and hate Thorne for many reasons. But Cinder needs a friend right now and she currently doesn’t want to strangle him. I count that as a good thing.

This isn’t really my style of book. I wasn’t super interested for most of it, and it’s nowhere near my favorites. But it’s still pretty good. My favorite chapter is chapter 28 because it’s a lot sillier than most of the book for me. I did like the trial and what it taught me about that time. 4 stars!
