When he had thought of death before, he had thought of it either as a literary event or as the slow, quiet attrition of time against imperfect flesh. He had not thought of it as the explosion of violence upon a battlefield, as the gush of blood from the ruptured throat.

i found this novel at the right time. somehow i never thought i’d grow old enough to become a collegiate girl. i’ve spent years devoid of a desire not born of physiological need yet still in possession of utmost importance, resulting in a sense of listlessness and uncertainty in regards to what awaits me in the foreseeable future. i think william stoner is what i need to hear. so far, i have high hopes for this.

this heroine is, in fact, completely stupid.

she’s referred to herself as delusional for five times now (i counted) and frankly, i find it insensitive, as someone who intermittently lapses into psychotic episodes. the bigger issue though is that it’s fucking annoying, because that’s not how ‘delusions’ work. she’s just fucking stupid. hope this helps!

i wasn’t expecting a prolific literary masterpiece in the first place, but somehow i’m possessed by disappointment. maybe this genre just isn’t for me. it’s pornographic without the eroticism, overtly sexual without intimacy.

also, how am i supposed to take him seriously? she refers to him as ‘silver mask’ in the narration. be for fucking real.
