Récit documentaire très fluide. Beaucoup appreciés les chapitres consacrés aux rélations entre le peuple d’Israël et les civilisations anciennes à travers la domination mésopotamiques, hellénistique et romaine. L’auteur explore des sources bibliques, archéologiques et extra-canoniques, au-delà du canon deutéronomique, dans un format très intriguant

Fasziniert von diesem gnadenlosen Porträt eines Mannes inmitten der vorkriegerischen Zeiten. Heinrich Mann fängt mit seinen effektiven Narrativmitteln und skrupellosen Schnappschüssen einer Ära ein.

Ich finde es faszinierend, wie viele Anreize die bewusst holprige Erzählung von Adalbert anbietet, zwischen einem selbst ernannten "deterministischen Puzzle" und einem gründlicheren Erinnerungsprozess.

Erinnerungen, Personen, Orten sind in einem unauflöslich verbunden mit dem Blick auf ein aus den Mitte 50er Jahren schwedische Gehäuse: "Wenn ich es recht bedenke, komme ich zum Schluss, dass ich so gut wie nie alleine zu Hause war. Tante Gunhild war immer da in dem schiefen Holzhaus auf die selbstverständliche Art wie die Möbel, die Badewanne im Keller, der alte Höfen und die Geranie im Küchenfenster".

I came at the end of this incredible story not with some disappointment

Exhilarated by Violet's snappy introduction at the beginning of the unwanted meeting with Phineas in the Lady Laura's foyer : "I am alone - a poor unprotected female. But I fear nothing (...). We unprotected females in these days are so self-reliant that our natural protectors fall off from us, finding themselves to be no longer wanted."

When I bumped into a 1985 paperback edition in a charming little second hand library in Brussels, I known only the fame of this author. Over the next few weeks, this pocket book is accompanying me in the tram, train, on the desk, at my bedside and is gradually becoming part of my circadian cycle.

Found Monique Pittman words and her comparison with Foucault inspiring: "Meaning is limitless and truth infinite. Humans respond by establishing limitations and institutions which enforce such limits[...]. Unwritten guidelines governing the production of knowledge also purport to maintain the stability of a culture. Woolf's characters each produce readings based on their personal and communal predisposition [...] "

Took back my lovely Collins paperback after a long time. Still enchanted by the public scenes where each character remains suspended in a timeless motion and anyone's thought stream is revealed and yet unspokeable to the other. In this enhanced depiction, each second is bursting of past emotions, projections, and regrets. I'm impressed by Woolf's capacity to navigate through each contradicting individuality
