I was lucky to meet an extremely intelligent and interesting guy on my trip in October. We talked about everything while randomly meeting at the start of a hike and I’m finally getting into one of his book recommendations. I need to start finishing a book because I’m reading too many at once..

I already regret reading this. It's going to be a slow read because I will allow no more than one cringe per day. I don't think I can even do quotes like I planned.

“Hollowness: that I understand. I’m starting to believe that there isn’t anything you can do to fix it. That’s what I’ve taken from the therapy sessions: the holes in your life are permanent. You have to grow around them, like tree roots around concrete; you mould yourself through the gaps.”

“”What happened to you, Rachel?” he asked me. “When did you become so weak?” I don’t know. I don’t know where that strength went, I don’t remember losing it. I think that over time it got chipped away, bit by bit, by life, by the living of it.” -relatable

If there is food I eat it, in case there is none on the morrow.” He smiled.” -agreed

So far, this is the most interested I’ve been in a story. Still not a fan of Nick. The girl is officially gone, TBC.

Out of context: “You mean if I go into latrine to relieve myself I should take along at least seven buddies to keep me from brooding on the can?” - the type of smart ass response I would give toxic authority lol think Shawn vibes from Psych

“Mexico IS like a walnut; it’s brown and hard and you feel it with your eye and it FEELS like the walnut! You’re making sense, old man, a sense of your own. You’re not crazy the way they think. Yes…I see…” - AI explains: “Mexico can be compared to a walnut because, like the nut's hard outer shell, it has a seemingly tough exterior with a rich and diverse interior” (can compare anything I guess lol)

So far I do like Amy better than Nick, but I’m on a past tense pov for her. I could see myself not liking her later on. TBD

You can tell a lot about an author based on how they write. It’s an extension of themselves whether it’s fiction or not. Gives off pretentious BUT I do appreciate how she keeps it real by how graphic she gets. I don’t dislike the story so far.

Another new book. Easy read so far. “”Alice Cooper?” Dad asks. “Have we no standards? At least sing the Ramones.”” - it’s not that serious, but not a fan of people with a music superiority complex. Big believer in letting people like what they like. It doesn’t make you better or worse. Seems like a random thing to pick on, but this story talks about music quite a bit.

I feel like I watched the movie already but it’s a little fuzzy 🤔 at least part of it was watched. So far an easy read, but it’s just a little depressing. Touches on loneliness, monotony, and alcoholism.

“He was a Southerner and a slaveholder—yet in his heart of hearts he looked forward to the day when slavery would end.” - perspectives like that make me curious. If only we could have a conversation with him. I want to know why he owned slaves and why he was looking forward to slavery ending at the same time. When I was young, I’d be angry with him for owning slaves. Now I’m just curious. Reality is gray.

“What the Chronics are — or most of us — are machines with flaws inside that can’t be repaired, flaws born in, or flaws beat in over so many years…” - I liked how it was phrased because I’ve always thought of people as complex machines. Mental health or other physical illness (because mental is still technically physical) is malfunctioning of the machine.

“Graham Greene once said that life was lived in the first twenty years and the remainder was just reflection.” -that has to be one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read. I’ve been sitting here contemplating how that can be twisted to make sense, or if it’s just some pseudo intellectual nonsense. Looked up the real quote. Paul here is the pseudo intellectual. Neurosurgeon ego — still no one deserves cancer.

“The tricky part of illness is that, as you go through it, your values are constantly changing. You try to figure out what matters to you, and then you keep figuring it out.” - sometimes it’s not possible to do what you originally wanted either, and that’s where you also figure out what want can replace it.

“”I got out of bed and took a step forward, repeating the phrase over and over: “I can’t go on. I’ll go on.”

Because I would have to learn to live in a different way, seeing death as an imposing itinerant visitor but knowing that even if I’m dying, until I actually die, I am still living.””

-I relate to this feeling, I had both physical & mental pain. Felt like I couldn’t go on, yet I did.

““Will having a newborn distract from the time we have together?” She asked. “Don’t you think saying goodbye to your child will make your death more painful?”

“Wouldn’t it be great if it did?” I said. Lucy and I both felt that life wasn’t about avoiding suffering.”—An unfortunate truth.

Also not a good book to read while in a below average mood.

A neurosurgery to get rid of a hand tremor from Parkinson’s is fascinating. In a certain spot the tremor had gone away, but the patient felt overwhelmingly sad. They took it out and went 2 mm to the right. Tremor gone and no sadness. Surgeries like that are what have shaped my opinion on how we are basically just machines, controlled by our brain.

“When there’s no place for the scalpel, words are the surgeon’s only tool.” — when they know there is nothing that can be done, their words will forever impact the family of the person who is dying or has died. He admits that there are times he had been going through the motions and focused on the rote treatment of disease. He was missing the larger human significance.
