The human brain grows an excess of neurons, eliminates the extra cells early in life (synaptic pruning). Only the connections you need are kept. Unused neurons later in life can make neural connections weaken (it’s more complicated) so it’s important to keep up with physical and mental exercise. (Why I enjoy reading a variety of topics and try to bring variation to physical exercise)

Restarting this because I’m gonna add random facts as I go.
a human brain contains roughly 86 billion nerve cells/neurons, and we use all of them
an estimated 1 in 4 people worldwide will face a neurological or psychiatric condition I wonder if that includes mild cases. At what point does anxiety count, etc? It’s a normal human emotion, but many are labeled as having a disorder. I have my doubts.

Really annoyed that they said “unused neurons can wither away”..such a simplification. It’s only the connections that weaken/kinda wither, which can always be improved. Also the hippocampus is always producing new neurons, and those ones will die if not used (apoptosis). I get that they’re trying to make it simple for people, but the average person isn’t going to interpret some of this correctly..I should just read a textbook.
