The ending of this book is just a bunch of ridiculous things that don’t really go together.

If this part is the true explanation for everything that happened, what do I continue reading for? Also how could Jacob just know all of this? I don’t enjoy that we weren’t brought along for any of it. He just suddenly “knew” all of it. It was too easy.

I’m struggling to want to continue this book. So far, it seems nothing more than a political commentary on xenophobia and environmentalism. At one point I almost gave up on it, but then I was enticed by a possible “haunted spaceship” however we have not been clued into what that actually means and I’m not sure if we ever will be.

The romance that was introduced in this book is confusing to me. The book takes pains to color every man as an aggressor or a threat to women. Yet the main female protagonist has no issues with hooking up with the other male lead. I feel like this book can’t figure out what kind of feminist narrative to have. Do I want a victim mentality, or am I a strong woman who don’t need no man? It’s inconsistent.

This book has strayed more into the supernatural than any other book in this series so far. It has improved from my initial frustration, but I’m not sure where this part will go from here. Barbarians from deep outer space and now monsters? Are they one and the same? Where is this going? My interest is definitely piqued, but I also need to know about Mustang, Darrow, and Lysander! This is just torture.

The “sexism” in this book feels very forced. It seems unrealistic some of the ways the men in this book treat the women. I understand the author wants to create strong women characters and possibly have a commentary about #metoo but it just seems shrill and whiny.

In starting this book, I felt like I had picked up a series in the middle, with no context of what has been happening. New terms, new characters. A battle happening on a new planet with new cities and towns. I thought after the first couple chapters, I’d get back into the swing of things, but this has continued. This book feels like I missed a book before it. It is almost totally war strategy and not much context.

Well, that was the most intense, captivating chapter of this series yet! I loved the call back to the original book as we find Sietch Tabr! I have missed connections with what originally made me want to read this series. That being said, it ended in a most “Frank Herbert” fashion in that I have no idea what it all means! A huge buildup for more philosophical mumbo jumbo. Thanks man.

I have noticed concerning trends in this series that I have just started to be aware of. The fixation on young children being treated as “adults” and manipulated and “imprinted” upon is deeply disturbing. Most of the main characters and side characters have endured sexual abuse and manipulation as children and are being used politically as a means to an end. To what end is unclear. Herbert is a pervert.

Dune is so back! Well, Rakis. We have met young Sheeana and she seems to be able to control the worms. I’m so glad to have the worms back. I always felt like they didn’t get enough attention in the beginning books, I’m excited to see where this goes. Young Duncan is in the wings. Poor guy can’t catch a break. We shall see where this road shall take him this time.
